14 DAYS TILL KICKOFF

Young gave the Titans -- and himself -- a scare Wednesday when the back of his throwing hand slammed against a helmet during practice. Young was examined on the field, then walked off for X-rays and did not return to practice.....

The Patriots released veteran Martin Gramatica, giving the place-kicking job to rookie Stephen Gostkowski. The fourth-round draft choice from Memphis won the competition to replace Adam Vinatieri, who signed with Indianapolis as a free agent in the offseason. On Aug. 19 in a 30-3 preseason victory against Arizona, Gostkowski was 3-for-3 on field goals -- two covering 37 yards and another 33 -- while Gramatica didn't play. In the Patriots preseason opener, a 26-23 loss at Atlanta, Gramatica was 2-for-2, and Gostkowski made his only attempt......

Davis' tour of the NFL continued Wednesday in St. Louis and the former Panthers running back soon could be joining the Rams. According to league sources, the Rams were in the process of putting together an offer for Davis on Wednesday night. Davis had previously visited the Eagles and, reportedly, passed a physical......

Dallas has acquired an undisclosed conditional pick from New Orleans in exchange for LB Scott Shanle.....

There is no trade in the works -- nor in their plans -- to send Staley back to the Eagles. Cowher did not say that, but Kevin Colbert, the Steelers' director of football operations, said no one in the organization has had any talks with the Eagles about Staley.....

The Dolphins have been reaching out to other teams about trading for one of Miami's defensive linemen. Manny Wright is on the trade block and there's a possibility Zgonina or Kevin Vickerson may join him.....

Drew Henson called it a good day, which says about everything one needs to know about his previous days with the Cowboys. The Cowboys are seeking a trade but will likely have to release Henson. The Chiefs are interested in Drew so stay tuned.....

When the Jaguars make the first cut to 75 players next week, Del Rio indicated the team will place some players on the injured-reserve list. Guard Dan Connolly, who had surgery on a broken finger, and defensive lineman Tony Williams, who may undergo surgery for a ruptured bicep, are obvious candidates.....

CFB NEWS AND NOTESFormer Arizona State QB Sam Keller, who had been considered to be a top second-tier prospect for the 2007 draft, has reportedly enrolled at Nebraska according to a spokesperson in the registrar’s office at the school. Keller will be forced to redshirt at Nebraska this season and will be eligible to play his final season next year. Kellar opted to transfer after the Sun Devils announced that sophomore Rudy Carpenter would be the team's starter this fall.....

Iowa junior DE Kenny Iwebema was one of two Hawkeyes’ suspended for the team’s season opener on September 2nd against Montana for violating team policy. The 6-4, 270-pound Iwebema, who had 7 sacks in 2005, also missed the first week of fall practice for what were called personal issues.....

The NCAA won't penalize Notre Dame football and basketball players who participated in promotional spots for a sports talk show on a local television station. While the NCAA found that the athletes had made an improper "implied endorsement," there was no indication the violations were intentional, John Heisler, Notre Dame's senior associate athletic director, said Wednesday.....

Oklahoma has banned its athletes from working at a car dealership where two football players - including the team's starting quarterback - broke NCAA rules by accepting payment for more work than they performed. The university, in a report to the NCAA released Tuesday following an open records request by The Associated Press, said it banned athletes from working at Big Red Sports and Imports after Oklahoma's compliance staff received "poor and inappropriate treatment" from the dealership's previous management.
