The annual NFL Scouting Combine gets started later today in Indianapolis when the first group of players to be tested this week goes through orientation, have x-rays and undergo the Cybex test. By the end of the week, over 330 prospective NFL draft picks will go through 4 days of physical and mental tests as well as a battery of interviews by interested teams.

Texas QB Vince Young, expected to be among the top three players selected at April’s draft, confirmed earlier this week that he will not run or throw at the Combine in Indianapolis this week; Young, though, will make himself available to teams for interviews. Young will finally work out for pro teams at the Longhorns’ pro day in mid-March.

The father of star Virginia LB Ahmad Brooks said this weekend he expects his son to play for the Cavaliers this coming season. Perry Brooks, a former NFL player, was commenting on an internet report citing unidentified sources that Brooks had been dismissed from the team and would apply to the NFL's supplemental draft this summer. As we reported earlier, the school has denied the reports, however the Richmond Times-Union is reporting that according to their sources, Brooks has unspecified issues that must be resolved if he is to play again at Virginia. According to the rumor, Brooks dismissal stemmed from a recent "off-field incident." Brooks, a 6-4, 260-pound inside linebacker, led Virginia in tackles in both 2003 and 2004 and had been projected as a possible top pick at the 2006 draft, however, injuries marred his junior season and Brooks decided to return to school for his senior season rather than leave school early and enter this year's NFL draft.

Former star Canadian college RB Jesse Lumsden signed with Washington late last month. (Ed note: Turns out Lumsden came to terms with the Redskins during Senior Bowl week when we were in Mobile where his signing wasn’t so big!). Lumsden had signed with Seattle following the 2005 draft where he was passed over, however, after something of a promising start, the 6-2, 220-pound Lumsden was released by the Seahawks in training camp after he missed extensive practice time with an injury. Lumsden went on to finish the season playing with hometown Hamilton of the CFL which had made him a first round pick at the 2005 CFL draft. Lumsden makes four CFL players who haved signed with NFL teams this winter as part of a special agreement between the two leagues. In other moves, Cincinnati signed former Central Florida DE/OLB Rashad Jeanty who played with Edmonton the past couple of season, while Kansas City signed former TCU and Florida A&M QB Casey Printers, the CFL’s player of the year in 2004, and Green Bay signed P Jon Ryan who averaged over 50 yards a punt with Winnipeg last season.

Florida WR Kenneth Tookes has reportedly admitted that he was the one who fired a bullet into the bedroom wall of one of a local apartment building. Tookes claims the incident was an accident. The gun belonged to Florida junior CB Dee Webb. It was one of several guns belonging to webb police found when they investigated the incident. Webb is rated as one of the top CBs in the 2006 draft class.

Virginia officials have re-iterated that star MLB Ahmad Brooks is still with the team, however, rumors continue to circulate around the team that Brooks has been dismissed from the Cavaliers because of an undisclosed off-field incident. A Virginia spokesman told the The Richmond Times-Dispatch that Brooks' "status on our football team has not changed. He is a member of our football team. Ahmad's eligibility to participate has not changed." The paper, though, also reported that a source close to the football program "expressed surprised" that Brooks was still on the team. Brooks had been expected to be a relatively high pick at the 2006 draft, however, opted to return to school for his senior season after an injury plagued junior campaign. Stay tuned as we will continue to follow this story.

The NFL free agent signing period is supposed to start March 3rd, however, the actual start of the free agency period is in doubt pending resolution of an extension of the league's collective bargaining agreement and salary cap. If an agreement isn't reached by March 3, the NFL may head into free agency considering 2006 to be the final capped season. In that scenario, the 2007 season would feature no cap or maximum or minimum spending on player salaries. Union sources indicated this week that there has been no progress in talks between the league and the players' union, although the expectation is that the sides will work out an agreement. In fact, an extension really needs to be in place by the end of next week in order to give teams and players time to work out restructured contracts. With that in mind, there are also rumblings that the two sides could decide to delay the start of free agency. The current CBA agreement is scheduled to expire after the 2008 season, but the sides agreed previously to a three-year window in which an extension would be reached. If not, uncapped years would follow.

Cincinnati has signed former Central Florida DE/OLB Rashad Jeanty who has made a name for himself in the Canadian Football League the past couple of seasons playing with Edmonton. Jeanty left UCF early three year s ago, but wasn't drafted. The 6-3, 230-pound Jeanty, who had 8 sacks in 14 games last fall, played defensive end for Edmonton, but will likely be switched to OLB with the Bengals. Jeanty becomes the third CFL player to sign with an NFL club under a special arrangement between the two leagues. Earlier, Kansas City had signed former TCU and Florida A&M QB Casey Printers, the CFL’s player of the year in 2004, while Green Bay signed P Jon Ryan who averaged over 50 yards a punt with Winnipeg last season.

There is an unconfirmed report on the internet that Virginia has dismissed star MLB Ahmad Brooks from the team. However, according to a spokesman at the school, Brooks' status :has not changed." Brooks had been expected to be a relatively high pick at the 2006 draft, however, opted to return to school for his senior season after an injury plagued junior campaign. Stay tuned as we will continue to follow this story.

A little more information on the incident involving Florida junior Dee Webb, one of the better prospects at the position in the 2006 draft class. As reported yesterday, police in Gainesville reportedly found a loaded Smith & Wesson .38-caliber revolver and a Mossberg 12-gauge shotgun in a vehicle owned by Webb when they were investigated shots being fired at a local apartment building. It now appears today that police are investigating Webb as the possible shooter in an incident after a witness told police he saw Webb, who appeared to be carrying a small gun case, and three other unidentified men walking nearby after he heard a few shots. When police arrived in the area, they reportedly discovered a shell casing behind Webb's apartment; they also found an AR-15 rifle on the living room floor. Webb reportedly arrived shortly afterward with several companions and told police they had been at a Florida football banquet earlier in the evening. At that point, the scene appears to have turned a tad comical. According to a report in the Gainesville Sun, Webb, according to police, appeared intoxicated. He told officers the guns belonged to him and repeatedly asked police to take him to jail. According to police, Webb reportedly told police “he was going to be a millionaire soon…that he had a million-dollar career waiting for him in the NFL and his lawyers would clear him of this". Webb also reportedly also told police to handcuff him several times, however, there are still no formal charges against him so police declined. At the same time, though, Webb reportedly did tell officers that he didn't have any knowledge of anyone using the guns. And however it all ends up, its not likely that the incident will be included as Exhibit A in the NFL’s handbook on how to prepare for a “million-dollar’ career in the pros!

Same story for Boise State DB Cam Hall, who has entered a modified guilty plea to a charge of leaving the scene of an accident in which three members of a Boise family died last year. In exchange, prosecutors dropped a reckless driving charge. Hall is also reportedly requesting a withheld judgment, which would result in removal of the felony from his record if he meets conditions set by a judge, a condition supported by the prosecutor. The maximum penalty for leaving the scene of an accident is five years, however, Hall, a second-tier prospect for the 2006 draft, is expected to get probation. Hall originally faced involuntarily manslaughter charges, which were dropped in October. Hall will be sentenced April 10th. In the incident, Hall and another man were racing when the other man’s truck smashed into the victim’s family car. Hall was able to avoid the car, but didn't stop. He later called his football coach to tell him about the accident. Hall took himself off the Boise State roster following the accident, but was reinstated after two games; however, he also missed the Broncos bowl game after being declared academically ineligible.

Law done with Jets
http://www.nj.com/jets/ledger/index.ssf?/base/sports-0/1139982419305540.xml&coll=1

Former Nebraska QB Eric Crouch, the 2001 Heisman Trophy winner, has signed with Toronto of the CFL. Crouch was drafted in the 3rd round of the 2002 draft by St. Louis, however, he retired abruptly later that year after the Rams tried to convert him to a receiver. He since has had two tryouts with Green Bay Packers and one with Kansas City, but never stuck.

Former San Diego QB Ryan Leaf, one of the biggest draft busts in recent memory, is back in football after signing on as the quarterbacks’ coach at West Texas A&M. Leaf, the former Washington State star, was drafted second overall by San Diego in 1998, but had an undistinguished five-year career in the NFL which was plagued by injuries, along with numerous off-the-field problems.

Police in Gainesville reportedly found a loaded Smith & Wesson .38-caliber revolver and a Mossberg 12-gauge shotgun in a vehicle owned by Florida junior CB Dee Webb, one of the top-rated corner in the 2006 draft. Webb’s car was actually being driven by Gator WR Andre Caldwell. For good measure, police also reportedly found an AR-15 rifle and an AK-47 rifle inside Webb's apartment. No charges have been filed however, because the guns were being transported in a legal way. At the time they stopped Caldwell, police were trying to determine
the identity of a person who fired a shot into a local apartment.

Doctors have reportedly told Minnesota rookie P Chris Kluwe that he should be ready to resume kicking by training camp this summer, Kluwe, an undrafted free agent from UCLA who finished sixth in the NFL with a 44.1-yard gross punting average, had surgery in late January to repair a torn ACL in his right knee. Kluwe has already started the rehabilitation and reportedly has been given a projected recovery time of around 6 months.

Abraham may Jet out of N.Y.

Jets defensive end John Abraham, confused by the direction of the organization and upset that it seemingly doesn't consider him part of the long-term plan, has told friends that he wants to play elsewhere.
"He wants to get the hell out of New York," a person close to Abraham said yesterday. "He's pretty upset."
Abraham, eligible to become a free agent on March 3, might get his wish. The Jets still haven't had substantive contract talks with Abraham, and there appears to be no chance of signing him to a long-term deal by the start of free agency, according to several industry sources.

A.J. Feeley update

The Chargers are close to announcing their agreement with quarterback A.J. Feeley on a reworked two-year contract.
Feeley, acquired along with a sixth-round draft pick in a trade with Miami last October for QB Cleo Lemon, was the Chargers' third quarterback in 2005 and did not play in any games.
Terms of the deal are not known, but it will be at a substantial discount from what Feeley was scheduled to earn. Feeley was due $13.65 million on the remaining three years of his contract.

Tagliabue spoke yesterday to a group of New Orleans business leaders who have committed to helping support the Saints by purchasing suites, tickets and sponsorships.

The NFL has provided a $20 million grant to help speed repairs to the Superdome.

T.O. talk amuses Richardson
http://www.charlotte.com/mld/charlotte/sports/football/nfl/carolina_panthers/13846290.htm

TALKIN' BROWNS:

• As of now, the Browns have no intention of making any major changes in the football end of the front office or the coaching staff. General Manager Phil Savage believes that the organization desperately needs stability and a chance for his key people to grow. This is the first time since 1999-2000 that the Browns will have two consecutive seasons with same the GM, head coach, coordinators and top scouts in place.
• Some fans thought offensive coordinator Maurice Carthon should be in trouble. The Browns were 32nd in points scored and had the worst performance in the red zone. Savage believes in allowing his head coach a lot of freedom to make major decisions. So far, Romeo Crennel remains committed to Carthon.
• The challenge will be for the coaching staff to improve the offense because it appears the Browns will concentrate much of their draft and free-agent signings on defense.
• The Browns believe that they are set at running back with Reuben Droughns. They wish Lee Suggs could stay healthy, because they believe that his speed makes him an ideal change of pace from the bullish Droughns, but they can't trust Suggs' durability.
• The Browns have been extremely pleased with the attitude and behavior of William Green. But they consider him a pure backup, a straight-ahead runner. With Droughns, Suggs and Green, they have depth at the position.
• Droughns has another year at $1.2 million on his contract. The Browns are talking about an extension. It could be tricky because his agent is the infamous Drew Rosenhaus, but Droughns has indicated that he wants to stay here. He actually can't leave, all he can do is sit out and not get paid while demanding a new deal. The Browns don't think it will come to something that extreme.
• The Browns appreciate that Droughns has gained more than 1,200 yards in two consecutive years with two teams. This season, he proved he was not just a product of the Denver Broncos' offensive line.
• They like fullback Terrelle Smith, ``one of our really tough guys,'' a Browns operative said.
• Crennel might not announce a starting quarterback going into next training camp, but it's obvious the Browns want to develop Charlie Frye. They are happy with Trent Dilfer as a backup, and Dilfer is a tremendous supporter and teacher for Frye. So there are no plans to seriously tinker with quarterback.
• They believe tight end Kellen Winslow will finally be healthy enough to play by summer training camp. So far, he's coming back strong from his various injuries. Braylon Edwards is recovering from knee surgery and might not be close to 100 percent until the regular season starts.
• Antonio Bryant is a free agent. The Browns seem in no rush to sign him. Despite his 69 catches, they are not overwhelmed with the idea of keeping him for big money. They seem more interested in shopping for some veteran free-agent receivers. If Bryant leaves, they might bring in two.
• L.J. Shelton is a free agent. While the left tackle seemed so-so at best, he started all 16 games and rarely missed any plays. Decent left tackles are so hard to find, so Shelton could get a fairly lucrative offer somewhere else. The Browns are talking to him.
• Don't expect the Browns to draft an offensive lineman in the first round. They probably will go defense. But they do know that they have to get some depth on the offensive line.
• The only backup left tackle is Nat Dorsey, a player acquired from the Minnesota Vikings for Melvin Fowler. But he played so little last season, it's hard to know if he can start right now. Savage likes Dorsey and believes that he can eventually develop into a starter.
• Talks continue with free-agent defensive lineman Orpheus Roye. Talking to one football executive about which Browns players could make the starting lineup with the Pittsburgh Steelers, only two names came up -- right tackle Ryan Tucker and Roye. Roye had knee surgery after the season. He is 33 and is headed into his 11th year, so he has a lot of wear on his body. The Browns still want him back.
• Savage said fans keep coming up to him and saying, ``Draft A.J. Hawk.'' He got the message. But picking No. 12 in the first round, the Browns believe that the Ohio State star will be gone. But as one Browns executive told me, ``We'd love Hawk to slide. That's a no-brainer. You take him, you start him. A lot of young linebackers have played well right away, and we think he can do it, too.''
• If anything, Hawk seems to be rising in the draft and might go in the top five.
• The Browns desperately need a nose tackle for the middle of their 3-4 defense. They are checking out Haloti Ngata, a 6-foot-5, 338-pounder from Oregon. The junior has declared for the draft. He was the Pac-10 Co-Defensive Player of the Year. He blocked seven kicks in three years. He is a definite first-round pick.
• The Browns consider their secondary to be the team's strength. They believe that Brodney Pool will emerge as an impact safety in his second season. They are confident in their three cornerbacks: Daylon McCutcheon, Gary Baxter and Leigh Bodden. Other safeties are Brian Russell, Sean Jones and Chris Crocker.
• Jones did lead the team in special teams tackles. The question is if his athleticism can be harnessed to be an effective safety. Guess who was second in special teams tackles? Kent State's Joshua Cribbs. The Browns like Cribbs for his special teams work, kick returns and his speed.
• I've not heard much about it, but I keep wondering if the Browns will take Cribbs, the former KSU quarterback, and work him into an all-purpose player like Pittsburgh's Antwaan Randle El. It just seems obvious.
• Other than Andra Davis, no linebacker is a lock to start next year. It's no secret that Ben Taylor played hard, but seems ill-suited for the 3-4 alignment. Matt Stewart is decent and probably will start again, but he's not a big-play guy.
• The most interesting linebacker is Chaun Thompson, who has worked hard, is fast but doesn't bring the pressure on the quarterback the Browns would like. But neither does anyone else on the team. One of the top priorities is finding someone who can pressure the quarterback.

Could Mike Martz and Kurt Warner have a reunion in Motown? Don't rule it out. Martz, the Detroit Lions' new offensive coordinator, patched up his relationship with Warner after their falling out in St. Louis. Martz has confided to associates that if he ever needed a quarterback in his new destination - and he needs one in Detroit - he wouldn't hesitate to bring Warner in. Warner, who spent the 2005 season with Arizona, is a free agent. And what does Warner think? He's open to the idea of rejoining Martz. This is what Warner told Jeff Vernetti of KSLG (1380 AM) in an interview that will air today between 10 a.m. and noon: "With what we did offensively, and his offensive mind, and just as an offensive football coach, I haven't been around any better (than Martz). That always would be intriguing. And knowing the (Martz) system, loving the system, and feeling like it plays into my strengths. All of those things would be plusses. They've got a lot of skill guys there (in Detroit), they've got a lot of talent there, similar to what we had in St. Louis. You look at it from that standpoint, and I think it would be really exciting. It would be fun. And I know we would play the game that I play. I would be doing what I feel comfortable doing. And it would be a lot of fun - similar to the kind of innovative things that we did in our time in St. Louis."The Rams have some interest in longtime defensive coordinator Ted Cottrell (Buffalo, New York Jets and Minnesota) as defensive line coach. ... But Hughes, who had surgery on Jan. 6, was advised to take more time to heal by team doctors, and his new target date for a return is Feb. 21. "I was praying every night that I could heal at warp speed," Hughes told reporters in Cleveland. "Now I have to be patient." ... Former Mizzou star Kareem Rush is struggling with the NBA Charlotte Hornets, battling through injuries and shooting only 34 percent from the floor. In an interview with Mike Grimm on KMOX (1120 AM), Rams head coach Scott Linehan sounded upbeat about the return of running back Marshall Faulk in 2006. "I've had a couple of really good conversations with Marshall and I think he's very positive about having a couple of good years left in him," Linehan said. "And that's very positive. The veteran leadership is critical. In this day and age, because of the salary cap, it's hard to have that. There aren't many people like Marshall in this business who can affect a team positively. Not just as a player but as a leader that can teach everyone else."

NFL DRAFT 2006

LSU DT Claude Wroten, has apparently got a break from the law as prosecutors have declined to pursue a drug charge against him stemming from a traffic stop last month. Wroten was charged with possession of marijuana with intent to distribute after police stopped him for speeding and found the drug his car early in January. The District Attorney, though, did not spell out the reasons for dropping the charges. Whatever, the timing hasn’t been all that great for Wroten who had been considered something of a rising star in the 2006 draft class before the incident and still likely has a red flag next to his name.

Agent believes with Vince Young, Matt Leinart and Reggie Bush on the board, draft decisions won't be made until the final hours.http://www.statesman.com/sports/content/sports/stories/other/02/9steinberg.html

NFL NOTES:

Mike Reinfeldt, the Seahawks' vice president of football administration and lead contract negotiator, could be offered the job of president of the San Francisco 49ers, if it hasn't happened already. Reinfeldt interviewed for the position last month. The Seahawks seem intent on keeping Reinfeldt and matching any financial offer for his services but wouldn't stand in the way of his chance to be the top decision-maker for a team......

Doug Johnson will replace Kirt Kitna as the back up for the Bengals......

• One telling stat showing how far the Dolphins passing game needs to go: According to espn.com numbers guru K.C. Joyner, nearly 19 percent of Dolphins passes were either dropped (30 of them) or thrown inaccurately to open receivers, costing the Dolphins at least 1,068 yards.
That's ''insanely high,'' Joyner tells us, noting that the highest percentage in 2004 was 12.5 (by the Joey Harrington-led Detroit offense).
• The Dolphins have given indications to No. 3 QB Cleo Lemon that they would like to keep him around this offseason, though he's not a serious contender for the backup job. But free agent Sage Rosenfels has taken a hint and will look elsewhere......

Washington has acquired Carolina's 6th round pick this year in exchange for WR Rod Gardner; Tennessee gets a 7th rounder from Indianapolis for LB Rocky Calmus; and, we believe, Green Bay gets a 7th from the New York Jets for OT Steve Morley, although this has to be confirmed. In the Colts-Titans deal for LB Calmus, the pick could have escalated to a 6th if Calmus had played extensively this fall, however, he went on injured reserve way back in September.........

Cleveland reportedly acquired a 5th round pick this year from New England in a mid-season deal in which the Patriots acquired WR Andre Davis. Also, San Diego gets a 7th round pick from Minnesota for OG Tonui Fonoti; the pick could have escalated if Fonoto had met certain playing time levels however he only played in one game before going on injured reserve......

The Associated Press reported yesterday that the Oakland Raiders plan to interview Steelers offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt in the coming days for their head coaching vacancy.
Whisenhunt could move to the top of the team's list if the meeting goes well.
Whisenhunt will follow Al Saunders, James Lofton and Rod Marinelli in formally interviewing with the Raiders.
Oakland also held an informal talk with former St. Louis Rams coach Mike Martz, although nothing came of that meeting. Martz, however, wasn't someone Davis considered a candidate for the top job but, perhaps, for offensive coordinator.
Whisenhunt is in his ninth season as an NFL coach and second in charge of the Steelers offense after working the previous three years as the team's tight ends coach.
Since meeting with the Raiders last month, Saunders left the Kansas City Chiefs to become offensive coordinator of the Washington Redskins. Marinelli, the former defensive line coach in Tampa Bay, became the Detroit Lions' new head coach.
Lofton, a Hall of Fame receiver who coaches the San Diego Chargers' receivers, is the only minority candidate to interview..........

The Patriots are apparently interested in talking to Seahawks receiver Joe Jurevicius, who like NFL MVP Shaun Alexander and Pro Bowl guard Steve Hutchinson, are now free agents. Jurevicius signed a one-year deal with Seattle before the season and became a critical cog after injuries to starting receivers Darrell Jackson and Bobby Engram earlier this season. Jurevicius, who played in his third Super Bowl with three different teams [Giants, Bucs and Seahawks] in just his eighth year, had 10 touchdown catches this season. ... The referees spent most of the pregame manning the neutral zone separating the teams, perhaps fearful of a flare-up relating to Steelers linebacker Joey Porter's verbal war last week with Seahawks tight end Jerramy Stevens over comments made about Jerome Bettis. ...

The official attendance was 68,206. ... Willie Parker's 75-yard touchdown run was the longest in Super Bowl history. ... Kelly Herndon's 76-yard interception return of a Ben Roethlisberger pass in the third quarter was the longest interception return in Super Bowl history........

Network News

ABC's telecast of the Super Bowl XL was the last for the network which originated "Monday Night Football" in 1970. Next season, ESPN takes over the Monday night package and NBC, former home of the AFC, begins televising Sunday night games. In addition, the NFL Network, whose presence - along with ESPN - dominated broadcast coverage this week, will begin a Thursday night/Saturday night package of games on Thanksgiving. Fans holding tickets to Sunday games after Thanksgiving should be advised the NFL now has the right to change starting times from 1 or 4 to 8:30 to accommodate NBC, but must do so two weeks before the game.In an announcement expected today, James Brown will leave as the host of "Fox NFL Sunday" to take the same job on CBS' "The NFL Today." Brown will replace Greg Gumbel, who will return to the booth as part of CBS' No. 2 team with Dan Dierdorf. Gumbel and Phil Simms comprised CBS' top team until 2005 when Jim Nantz moved out of the studio. And speculation remains that ABC's Al Michaels, the long-time voice of "Monday Night Football," will move to NBC

Chiefs may be open to receiver after all

Three months ago, then Chiefs coach Dick Vermeil said under no circumstances would Kansas City have the slightest interest in signing malcontent wide receiver Terrell Owens.
Vermeil forgot one circumstance that could alter that: himself not being back. That is now the case after Vermeil's retirement and the hiring of Herman Edwards, and hence T.O. now has at least a chance of going to KC, sources close to the Chiefs said.
Chiefs president and general manager Carl Peterson conceded last week that Kansas City was ''somewhat interested" in Owens and that he was planning to have a lengthy discussion with Edwards about the possibility. T.O. may be a locker room problem, but he's also a five-time Pro Bowl selection; the question is, to whom is he most dangerous -- the opposing team or your team?
Edwards has had success with some problem players, and the Chiefs have begun to think that Owens may be ready to change after being suspended by the Eagles (at a cost of hundreds of thousands of dollars) and then told to take his ball (and his mouth) and go home for the remainder of the season.
''I've always felt Herm has the ability to bridge the gap between a lot of players," Peterson said, ''whether they're black or white, whether they're offense or defense or special teams, whether they're superstars or backup players. I think that's one of his strengths.
''Now based on that, certainly I will have this conversation with him, and I'm sure there are other teams in the NFL who will do the same thing."
One guy who said he wouldn't mind that is All-Pro tight end Tony Gonzalez.
''I know T.O, and he's a guy who wants to be competitive, wants to play hard, and if they brought him in, I'd have no problem with that," Gonzalez said. ''It would bother me if [Owens] came in and started doing the same things he was doing in Philly. The way to keep guy like Terrell Owens happy is you've got to throw him the ball, which I have no problem with. He's a great player. To me, he's probably one of the top two receivers in the league."
Gonzalez had 78 catches last year and has become a fixture in the Chiefs passing game, and his production would drop with the arrival of Owens. Despite that, Gonzalez said what so many of Owens's peers felt, even during his troubled days last season after a team-shattering feud with quarterback Donovan McNabb and the Eagles organization.
''If he can get us to the Super Bowl, then I'm all for it," Gonzalez said. ''Terrell Owens, you have to understand what type of person he is. I'm friends with him off the field. I understand what type of person he is. Don't come and put all these expectations on him, because more than likely he's not going to change too much, but I think a guy like Herm Edwards, from what I've heard, can handle a guy like this."

Super Bowl Practice Reports
PITTSBURGH STEELERS (14-5) VS. SEATTLE SEAHAWKS (15-3) 6:15 PM EST

STEELERSFriday Update: Starting WR Hines Ward sat out the last half of Friday's practice with a sore shoulder. However, he wasn't injured and was rested strictly as a precautionary measure. "He's fine," head coach Bill Cowher said after Friday's practice. "I'm not listing him (on the injury report) so he's fine."Starting FB Dan Kreider (knee) did limited work on Friday but was upgraded to probable and is expected to start. Cowher on Thursday discussed how Kreider got hurt.“Danny hurt his knee in the Denver game. Last week he kind of aggravated it in practice one day. We were trying to get him back for yesterday’s practice. He worked on Tuesday and probably just overworked it a little bit. We are just being more precautionary than anything. He’s still listed as questionable and he’ll be limited today. Hopefully he’ll do more tomorrow. At this point we are just being smart. He doesn’t need a lot of reps. We’ve been at this thing for a while now. We are just trying to get him ready for Sunday. He is listed as questionable and we’ll go from there. If he can’t make it, (backup RB) Verron Haynes would step in and take his position."Backup DE Travis Kirschke (groin) did limited work on Friday but was upgraded to probable and is expected to play.Backup OLB James Harrison (groin) practiced again Friday and is expected to play. Starting S Troy Polamalu (ankle) woke up Thursday morning with his ankle soreness and was added to the injury report as probable. He participated in most of Friday's practice and ran and cut on his ankle without any problems and is ready to play. "Troy's fine," Cowher said after Friday's practice. Polamalu tweaked his ankle early in Thursday's practice and Cowher discussed his situation on Friday morning."Troy did -- we had an MRI last night and everything came back negative, or positive, however, from our standpoint. So there was nothing really there. Now, he'll feel better. I haven't seen him this morning yet. We'll see how he feels today and monitor how much he does today. He'll be fine by Sunday. He was feeling pretty good last night."
Thursday Update: Starting FB Dan Kreider (knee) missed practice again Thursday and remains questionable to play.Backup DE Travis Kirschke (groin) missed practice again Thursday and remains questionable to play. "I haven't changed anybody's status," head coach Bill Cowher said after Thursday's practice. "They're both day-to-day. Hopefully they will work tomorrow."
Backup OLB James Harrison (ankle-probable) practiced again Thursday and is expected to play. Starting S Troy Polamalu was limited on Thursday but will start. He's not listed on the injury report.

SEAHAWKS

Update: #4 WR D.J .Hackett (hamstring-probable) was injured early during Thursday's practice and was added to the injury report as probable. Hackett practiced fully on Friday and is expected to play. Starting CB Andre Dyson (quadriceps-probable) practiced again Friday and is expected to start.
Thursday Update: Starting WR Darrell Jackson isn't listed on the injury report but he had been bothered by swelling in his knee from time to time for the past few months though the issue hasn't cropped up this week. He missed nine games earlier in the season after knee surgery.“My rehabilitation schedule was pretty much easy. Watching the team win. They say. ‘winning conquers all’ and I guess it conquers me being injured and stuff like that. Luckily I was able to rehab good and those guys did a good job. My doctor, Dr. (John) Uribe did a good job with my surgery so I was able to come back and perform at the level I was at the end of the year and contribute a little bit to the Super Bowl run. I’m not really sure how close I am (to 100 percent) I just know I’m able to play and go out there and compete and able to contribute a little bit to help our team win. It’s disappointing with everyone having these accolades this year that it could have been a Pro Bowl year for me but it’s not disappointing because our goals are conquered, we are going to the Super Bowl, we had a good winning streak, our wide receiver group did good, got a lot of praises I was able to come back and contribute a little bit in the end and now I’m in position to play in my first Super Bowl ever," Jackson said.#4 WR D.J. Hackett (hamstring) was added to the injury report as probable after not practicing Thursday. Starting CB Andre Dyson (quadriceps-probable) returned to practice on Thursday and is expected to start. Is he 100 percent?“No, you’re not ever 100 percent. You just have to keep playing and forget about it and go out there – it’s the last game. All I need is 60 more minutes out of my body and then I can rest for a few months," Dyson said.

NFL DRAFT 2006 NEWS
Dolphins buzz: NFL folks at the Senior Bowl say coach Nick Saban was enamored with Jay Cutler and told a team official that Miami would be in great shape if it could acquire the Vanderbilt QB. . . . Saban associates say he wants to make a major signing on the O-line (New Orleans C LeCharles Bentley and Seattle G Steve Hutchinson are potential targets). Saban, by the way, commended Vernon Carey for making ''very nice progress'' at right tackle, though he was assured of nothing in a season-ending meeting. . . . CB Sam Madison (linked to K.C., Atlanta and San Diego) reiterated to friends he won't take a pay cut from Miami.

• UM buzz: Among the changes you'll see on offense: Shorter quarterback drops and running backs sometimes lining up at receiver. Expect a lot more creativity. . . . High praise for two UM commitments: Larry Coker called DL Josh Holmes ''a little like Warren Sapp,'' and said Edgerrin James ''tells

Bucs Hire Defensive Line Coach
Feb 5, 2006
TAMPA - Just like they did several years ago when they needed to fill defensive coaching vacancies, the Bucs dipped into the college ranks.
Tampa Bay has hired USC defensive line coach Jethro Franklin, according to the Los Angeles Daily News. Franklin, who had been with the Trojans for only a year, having previously served as an assistant coach with the Green Bay Packers, worked on the same USC staff as Lane Kiffin, the Trojans' offensive coordinator and Bucs defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin's son.
Franklin replaces Rod Marinelli, who had been the Bucs' defensive line coach since 1996 until last month when he was selected as the Detroit Lions' head coach. The Bucs also are interviewing candidates to replace vacancies left by former defensive backs coach Mike Tomlin, who was hired as the Minnesota Vikings' defensive coordinator and assistant defensive backs coach Raheem Morris, who was hired as Kansas State's defensive coordinator.
From 2000-04, Franklin worked as the Packers' defensive line coach. Prior to that, he was on the UCLA staff coaching the interior defensive line in 1999. A former Fresno State standout, Franklin spent a couple of seasons in the NFL. He was drafted by the Houston Oilers in 1988 and played for Seattle in 1989.

NFL DRAFT 2006 NEWS

Minnesota junior RB Gary Russell, a potential high pick in either 2007 or 2008, is not in school this semester because of academic difficulties. Russell will reportedly enrol in a junior college this spring to in attempt to regain his eligibility this fall. Sources close to the program indicate, though, that Russell has a number of hurdles to clear and he, in fact, may never suit up with the Gophers again. Last fall, the 5-10, 205-pound Russell gained 1,130 yards on the ground as he averaged over 6 yards per carry while sharing time with Laurence Maroney who is expected to be a first round pick in this year’s NFL draft. Russell also set a single-season school record 19 total TDs as a sophomore in 2005 and had been considered something of a Heisman Trophy darkhorse with the Minnesota job all to himself

ONE MORE YEAR FOR SAINTS IN THE BIG EASY

Saints agreed on a one-year deal last month to return their operations to New Orleans. Repairs to the Louisiana Superdome, which was damaged during Hurricane Katrina and the relief efforts after it, are scheduled to be completed by Sept. 1, in time for the Saints’ home opener. The stadium will feature new scoreboards and a new sound system and playing turf. A few other upgrades to areas such as the luxury suites likely won’t be completed until after next season. These improvements should have a positive impact on the Superdome’s ability to lure big games back to New Orleans. The Sugar Bowl has already announced that it plans to return to New Orleans next year, and the awarding of another Super Bowl date may not be far off.
Nevertheless, while a new head coach and a return home should be reasons to celebrate, there is a segment of the NFL world that remains skeptical.
When NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue and team owner Tom Benson announced that the Saints were marching back to The Big Easy, that was only after Benson had signed a one-year deal to keep the Saints in New Orleans. No long-term deal was in place at the time of this writing, and no long-term deal was planned any time soon. And the Saints still have an exit clause in their contract with the Superdome that was pushed back to March 2007.
The Saints and the NFL are playing a wait-and-see game. Benson wants to make sure enough fans return to the Superdome so he can pay his bills, and the NFL also wants to see that New Orleans is still dedicated to the NFL.
Suffice it to say, 2006 will be by far the most important year in this franchise’s history.
