30 DAYS TILL KICKOFF

According to several people familiar with the presentations, Roger Goodell, the league’s chief operating officer and the front-runner to get the job, made an impressive appearance.....

In something of a surprise, Denver has promoted undrafted rookie free agent RB Mike Bell into the Broncos’ starting lineup. Bell was leapfrogged over Ron Dayne, the former Giants’ #1 pick, and Tatum Bell. In fact, Dayne, the 11th player overall in 2000, has fallen all the way #3 on the Broncos’ depth chart.....

Left tackle Willie Roaf, who recently announced plans to retire, is out of the country. But Edwards said he 'kind of knows where he’s at,' and still hasn’t given up hope the 11-time Pro Bowler will be back.....

Tannenbaum has contacted Tennessee about Chris Brown, the starter in a crowded backfield... Chicago's Thomas Jones also may be available, but he's rehabbing a hamstring pull and starter Cedric Benson is out with a shoulder injury, so the Bears aren't likely to be dealing for at least a few weeks.....

With the chance that Ward could be out for a while, Accorsi admitted the Giants may look into acquiring another running back. Former Giant and Coughlin favorite Mike Cloud is a possibility.....

CFB NEWS AND NOTES

Nebraska CB Zackary Bowman, a decent second-tier type prospect for the 2006 draft, will miss the season after an MRI revealed he had torn an ACL when he landed awkwardly at practice over the weekend. Bowman, who had 14 pass breakups last fall, still has a redshirt season and expects to be back with the Huskers next fall.....

Virginia has re-instated DB Tony Franklin after being dismissed from the team last spring for unspecified reasons. Franklin was suspended for a game late last season for violating team rules and did not make the trip to the Music City Bowl in December and then was kicked off the team on the eve of spring practice in March.....
