NFL NEWS AND NOTES

The Miami Herald reports that negotiations between the Chiefs and Dolphins regarding QB Trent Green have reached an impasse. Chiefs GM Carl Peterson wants a second-round pick for Green, while the Dolphins want to give a second-day pick for him. "I told (Dolphins GM Randy Mueller) that they made a great trade with New England," Peterson said, referring to a recent deal that sent receiver Wes Welker to the Patriots. "They got for what we would consider a third wide receiver and kick-return specialist second- and seventh-round draft picks. I told him that I think a starting quarterback is worth that. Now we need to work toward something that's fair. We'll talk again this week. Whether it gets done before the draft or not, I can't say. It may happen this week, or it may not happen until after the draft."...

The Charlotte Observer reports that Panthers RB DeShaun Foster has restructured his contract, giving the Panthers an extra $1 million in cap space. Foster is expected to compete for the starting RB job in Carolina but will wind up sharing ball-carrying duties with DeAngelo Williams....

The New York Daily News reports that free-agent RB Arlen Harris worked out for the Giants recently. The club may sign him to a contract after the draft....

The Dayton Daily News reports that free-agent QB Tim Rattay worked out for the Bengals but did not sign a contract.....

According to multiple sources, veteran CB Tory James has signed a one-year deal with the Patriots, boosting their cornerback depth and providing as an insurance policy in case franchised CB Asante Samuel sits out the 2007 season.....

The Tennessean reports that the agent for restricted free agent RB Michael Turner says that no trade involving his client is imminent. Turner had visits recently with the Titans and Bills. If either team, or another team, wants him, they would have to either surrender a first- and third-round pick to the Chargers for him or negotiate a trade with the Chargers that would set him free from being a restricted free agent. "As of right now, it looks like Michael is going to be in San Diego," his agent said. "Things could change, and it could happen on draft day, too.".
