NFL NEWS AND NOTES

According to the Indianapolis Star, the Colts have looked into adding a veteran RB to complement Joseph Addai. The agent for free agent Kevan Barlow said he has discussed his client with the Colts, who are looking to replace Dominic Rhodes in their backfield. Rhodes, whose tag-team effort with Addai was instrumental in the Colts' run to a Super Bowl victory last season, signed with Oakland in March.....

According to the New York Post, Giants fullback Jim Finn just wants a fair chance to win the job. He's started the past four seasons for the Giants, but they are looking to replace him. Back in mid-March, the Giants opened the vault and signed restricted free agent Vonta Leach to a four-year, $7.2 million offer sheet, big money for a fullback. The Texans eventually matched the offer and kept Leach, but the message sent Finn's way was clearer than any lead block he can ever hope to make. Finn was told by Tom Coughlin that the interest in Leach was for the sake of increasing competition at the position.....

According to ESPN.com, the Falcons have signed QB Joey Harrington to backup starter Michael Vick. Last season, Harrington played in 11 games for the Miami Dolphins. He passed for 2,236 yards along with 12 touchdowns and 15 interceptions.....

According to ESPN.com, the Lions are in trade negotiations with the Raiders regarding backup QB Josh McCown. The Raiders apparently are looking for a veteran QB as they mull whether to draft LSU's JaMarcus Russell or Notre Dame's Brady Quinn with the top pick in this month's NFL draft. McCown signed with the Lions last off-season, but lost the QB competition to Jon Kitna and saw his only game action at wide receiver. McCown is in the final season of a two-year deal and will earn $2 million this season.....

Dolphins QB Daunte Culpepper said he won't fully participate in the team's first 2007 minicamp this coming weekend as his 17-month rehabilitation from a major knee injury continues, according to the Sun-Sentinel. Culpepper, though, remains optimistic about regaining the form that made him one of the NFL's best quarterbacks in 2004 even though his future with the Dolphins remains in question as the team considers other options at the position. "When I'm healthy it won't matter," Culpepper said after a recent workout. "Without a doubt, [I'm still the man]. I definitely want to be the [Dolphins'] quarterback and that's what I'm working hard to be. Like I said, when I'm healthy, it's no issue." Culpepper, who underwent a second surgery on his right knee in December, said he has started running but isn't ready to "push it 100 percent.".....

According to the Star Tribune, the Vikings have completed a long-expected restructuring of TE Jim Kleinsasser's contract. He took a $1 million reduction in his base salary for 2007, dropping from $2.9 million to $1.9 million. His salary in 2008 went from $2.9 million to $2.4 million. It was unknown Friday whether Kleinsasser would have the opportunity to earn back the money through incentives.....

Earlier this week, Coach Jeff Fisher said, based on the timetable followed by other players who've had the same injury, WR David Givens has a chance to be ready for the start of the regular season, according to The Tennessean. Others in the organization aren't nearly as optimistic. Givens didn't just suffer a torn anterior cruciate ligament Nov. 12 against the Ravens. He also tore his meniscus, which had to be repaired, and he broke a bone in his knee, which required bone plugs in the break.....

A month after he was released by the Houston Texans, David Carr agreed Friday to a two-year deal to play for the Carolina Panthers. Carr, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2002 draft, will serve as Jake Delhomme's backup. "It's a case where we were obviously looking for someone to come in back up Jake and the opportunity to get a quarterback the caliber of David in free agency is unique," Panthers general manager Marty Hurney said. "We thought it was a good situation and a good opportunity for us.".....

About this time in the pre-draft process it seems that some players stock will be falling and right now there is a sense that the stock of Wisconsin OT Joe Thomas may have slipped slightly of late. Thomas has long been pretty much penciled in as the player most likely to be taken by Detroit with the second pick overall this year, however, Thomas appears to have dropped out of most teams top three after what were considered to be some unimpressive pre-draft workouts. Whether Thomas is truly falling, or just getting picked a little on of late is hard to determine, however, if he has slipped is isn’t by much. In fact, while he's not flashy, Thomas is still considered to be one of the best LT prospect to come along in a while. Meanwhile, no player may be moving up faster than Central Michigan OT Joe Staley who has broken into the top 20 on many value boards around the league. Indeed, some scouts won’t totally rule out the possibility that Staley might also go ahead of Levi Brown of Penn State, who is much bigger than Staley but is no where near as athletic as the former tight end.....

St. Louis and Denver have emerged as the two teams most interested in Carolina DT Kris Jenkins whom the Panthers are reportedly shopping. Jenkins had been considered to be one of, if not the, best defensive tackle in the NFL, but played little in 2004 and 2005 because of injuries. Jenkins did return this fall and went back to the Pro Bowl, but wasn’t as productive as earlier in the decade. The Panthers have reportedly been concerned about Jemkins’ weight, which may have approached as much as 400 pounds when he was injured. The fact that Jenkins blew off the first two weeks of Carolina's conditioning program this spring also didn’t his cause. Still, no word, though, on what the Panthers are expecting in return for Jenkins, a 27-year-old who is signed through 2009.
