Minnesota has formally placed LB Chad Greenway, the Vikings' #1 pick at the 2006 draft, on injured reserve. Greenway, taken 17th overall this past April, tore an ACL during the Vikings' pre-season opener this past weekend.....

Dallas has acquired WR Charlie Adams from Denver for an undisclosed 2007 draft pick.....

Linebacker Junior Seau, who had announced his retirement from the NFL Monday after a 16-year career, was en route to New England last night and, assuming he passes a physical, could sign a contract as early as today, according to multiple league sources.....

Steelers linebacker Joey Porter told the NFL Network last night that he almost did not show up at camp this summer, and the main reason he did was because of his close relationship with coach Bill Cowher.....

Vikings coach Brad Childress said Thursday that the team is exploring possibilities at the position and considering the price tags of available receivers. Philadelphia and Chicago are also among the teams that may bite at giving up a No. 3 for Lelie......

49ers coach Mike Nolan confirmed talks with the Jets about the availability of RB Kevan Barlow, but he said the discussions weren't serious and he assured Barlow he wasn't going to be traded. Another player on the Jets' radar, Falcons backup RB T.J. Duckett, sounded as if he's lobbying for a trade.....

One problem facing the Browns as they survey the NFL for potential backup quarterbacks: the market is pretty bare. A quality backup such as Matt Schaub of Atlanta will cost a high-round pick, while lower-tier guys like John Navarre of Arizona likely aren't much better than the Browns' current reserve QBs.....

Free agent DT Grady Jackson did not sign a contract yesterday but will reportedly meet again with Giants officials today.....


CFB NEWS AND NOTES

Utah junior QB Brian Johnson will take a redshirt season this fall to allow his knee to completely recover from surgery. Johnson tore an ACL and had surgery early in December. With Johnson sidelined, the #1 QB job with the Utes is down to a two-man battle between between senior Brett Ratliff, a top sleeper candidate for the 2007 draft, and Oklahoma transfer Tommy Grady, now a junior......

USC receiver Dwayne Jarrett and lineman Thomas Herring were briefly detained by police early Tuesday after they were picked up by a female driver in a car that officers were investigating, school officials said. Both players were walking to morning practice about 8 a.m. when a woman offered them a ride, said coach Pete Carroll. As the players were being dropped off, police swarmed the vehicle and handcuffed the woman, Jarrett and Herring.Saying there was an "investigation on the car," Carroll said the players were released after it was determined they weren't involved......
