NFL NEWS AND NOTES

Former Houston QB David Carr has agreed to a two-year deal to play for Carolina where he will likely be the primary backup to veteran Jake Delhomme in the immediate future. Carr was the #1 overall pick at the 2002 draft, but after an up-and-down career with the Texans was supplanted in the team’s starting lineup by Matt Schaub who was acquired from Atlanta in a trade earlier this month. And with Carr off the market, it may put additional pressure on team's with early picks at the 2007 draft and needs at QB to think about using their top pick this year on the position.....

Cleveland has reportedly opened negotiations with Kansas City QB Trent Green on what is being called a "ballpark contract" that would prompt him to want to come to Cleveland for a visit. Green has been given permission to shop himself, but reportedly would prefer to go to Miami. If the Browns did manage to acquire Green they might be less inclined to take a QB with the #3 pick at the 2007 draft, although there is a strong possibility that nothing will happen with Green until after this April’s draft. In fact, the Browns hosted both of this year’s top-rated quarterback prospects this week when LSU's JaMarcus Russell and Notre Dame's Brady Quinn came to town for a visit. Indeed, Quinn, who grew up in Dublin, Ohio, has said he wants to play for the Browns, the team he rooted for as a kid. The Browns also entertained Oklahoma RB Adrian Peterson, another top 5 prospect this week. Somewhat surprisingly, though, the Browns reportedly have not scheduled visits with either Georgia Tech WR Calvin Johnson or Wisconsin OT Joe Thomas, although either or both may still be very much on the Browns’ draft radar.....

One other potential deal that could impact this year’s opening round involves restricted free agent San Diego RB Michael Turner. Tennessee appears to be the team most interested in Turner, however, the Titans reportedly are not inclined considering to give up a first-round pick in exchange for LaDainian Tomlinon’s top backup, while Chargers G.M. A.J. Smith has said he's "flexible" on compensation. The Chargers had tendered Turner at the highest possible level meaning any team signing him would owe San Diego 1st and 3rd round picks as compensation if they signed Turner to an offer sheet and the Chargers declined to match. The deadline to sign restricted free agents is April 20.
