NFL NEWS AND NOTES
Kicker John Carney was released by the Saints on Thursday after asking to be let go after the team obtained Olindo Mare in a trade with Miami. The 43-year-old Carney was the Saints' all-time leader in field goal accuracy percentage (.833). He joined the Saints in 2001 and will be entering his 18th NFL season. "John wanted to explore other opportunities that are available in the NFL," said General Manager Mickey Loomis. "This is something we were sensitive to because he has been an important part of the Saints and the community during his time in New Orleans. We will always have a lot of respect for John as a person and a player."....
WR Patrick Crayton re-signed with the Dallas Cowboys to remain the No. 3 option behind Terrell Owens and Terry Glenn. The Cowboys offered Crayton, who was a restricted free agent, a one-year, $1.3 million tender to remain with the team. The signing was announced Thursday. Crayton played in all 16 games last season, his third with the Cowboys since being a seventh-round pick out of Northwestern Oklahoma State in 2004. He had a career-high 36 catches for 516 yards and four touchdowns last season and returned 11 punts for 85 yards.....
According to the Buffalo News, the Bills were scheduled to entertain free-agent running back Michael Turner of the San Diego Chargers Thursday. However, Turner encountered airline travel problems and was forced to postpone his visit to Buffalo. Turner, the backup to All Pro LaDainian Tomlinson, is a restricted free agent, and the Chargers are entertaining trade offers for him. While the Bills are scouting Turner, no signing or trade deal is considered imminent. The Bills continue to investigate all options for filling their needs leading up to the NFL Draft on April 28. Turner is expected to reschedule his trip to Buffalo sometime in the next week or so, but the exact date was not known.....
The Dallas Morning News reports that Cowboys WR Terrell Owens is expected to have a splint removed from his right ring finger Wednesday after undergoing a second surgery to reattach a torn tendon. Owens was in Cowboys' camp on Tuesday and worked out with the rest of the team. He's expected to become familiar with the updated offense the Cowboys will run and meet with his new coaches. Owens hopes to start catching passes in May, but may not do such a thing until camp opens in July.....
NFL Network reports that SS Mike Doss has signed a one-year deal with the Vikings. The former Colt has yet to play a full 16-game season in the NFL, playing in only six games in 2006 before tearing his right ACL....
The Gaston Gazette reports that the Panthers are scheduled to meet with free-agent QB Joey Harrington Wednesday. Harrington would be a backup QB behind Jake Delhomme if he signs with the Panthers.....
The Atlanta Journal Constitution reports that the Falcons are expected to work out QB Jay Fiedler, according to his agent. Fiedler is coming back from a major shoulder injury and did not play in the league last year.....
The Seattle Times reports that free agent QB David Carr has left Carolina without a contract and is coming to visit the Seahawks for two days. Carr would compete for the backup QB job behind Matt Hasselbeck with Seneca Wallace if he signs with the 'Hawks.....
