NFL DRAFT 2009
Missouri All-American TE Chase Coffman will undergo surgery next week on his injured left foot. Doctors will install a screw Tuesday into the fifth metatarsal bone to help the injury heal; Coffman hurt his foot on the final play of overtime in the Tigers' 30-23 Alamo Bowl victory over Northwestern earlier this week. Coffman is expected to be well enough to participate in the NFL combine in February and Missouri's pro days in March.
Virginia Tech junior FS Kam Chancellor announced after the Hokies’ 20-7 win over Cincinnati in the Orange Bowl earlier this week that he will not be entering the 2009 draft. The 6-2, 224-pound Chancellor, who likely projects to SS or even LB at the next level, had a strong bowl game in which he had an interception, bu otherwise had an inconsistent campaign this fall. Underclassmen have until January 15th to apply to the NFL for early entry to the upcoming draft.

Brown had said back in December that he would be returning for his senior season, however, changed his mind after rushing for a career-best 261 yards in yesterday’s win over Buffalo in the International Bowl. In the process, Brown became just the 14th player in major college history to run for 2,000 yards in a season.

Increase in the national gas tax

A federal commission is pushing for an increase in the national gas tax. The commission that oversees money spent on transportation projects is suggesting another 10 cents a gallon for gas, and 12-to-15 cents for diesel. Americans are driving less and as a result buying less gasoline, making it harder to fund road, bridge and transit programs.

Only 17% of Chicago 8th Graders Read at Grade Level
The education secretary was named Wensday, Arne Duncan, ran the Chicago public school system. Everybody applauded, "Well, great, why, fabulous appointment, Arne Duncan ran the Chicago public schools, well, I hope he can do for America what he did for Illinois and Chicago." Well, only 17% of eighth graders -- one example here -- can read at that level in Chicago schools overseen by Arne Duncan, the Obama education secretary designee. "In 2007, only 17 percent of eighth graders tested at or above grade level in reading in Chicago Public Schools -- the school system administered by Arne Duncan since 2001. Students in eighth grade are those most likely to have been in the Chicago system for a majority of Duncan's tenure. CNSNews.com used the scores for these students to best determine the results of Duncan's administration. ... In math, Chicago Public Schools’ average score increased from 254 in 2003 to 260 in 2007. The national average for 2007 was 280. Seventy-five percent of Chicago students scored below 283 in the math assessment."
Now, "Nationally, Chicago is the third largest school district with over 408,000 students. Its budget for 2007-2008 was $4.6 billion, according to information released by Chicago Public Schools. $862 million of that was supplied by the federal government." And so for this money, Chicago is lagging way behind, 17% of eighth graders can read at that level.

Clinton was right
President Bill Clinton was right when he called President-elect Barack Obama a fairytale before the election. Obama's health-care plan is going to expand coverage for 40 million new people, cover more things and cut premiums for everyone else.
How? Sorry I can't help you, perhaps someone can ask Obama to explain it. But consider Obama's tax plan to pay for it and the trillion dollars of new spending. He will only raise taxes on 5 percent and lower taxes on 95 percent of Americans. What genius. Now, Karl Marx thought of it first, but it still won't work. Actually most of the 95 percent aren't really getting "tax cuts."
Obama promised to give people refundable credits. So even if people owe no income taxes, you'll get your checks for free. Obama is committing economic malpractice by raising taxes in a recession because it risks making the economy worse.
The top 5 percent of taxpayers, mostly small businesses, already pay 60 percent of income taxes. They create most of the new jobs and are sensitive to higher taxes. Struggling or bankrupt businesses don't hire people and neither pays taxes.
Government raising taxes is like the farmer's choice. You can either eat the eggs or eat the chicken, but once you eat the chicken you'll get no more eggs.
