NFL Delays Ricky Williams' Return

Numerous publications report Sunday that QB Brett Favre is unhappy with the Packers' handling of trying to trade for Randy Moss and even requested a trade. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports Favre knew what the parameters of the trade between the Packers and Raiders would have been for Moss and was willing to take a pay cut to help bring Moss to Green Bay. FOX Sports reports that Favre asked to be traded out of town, then admitted he didn't really want that. "I just want to win; maybe I see things the wrong way," he told the Biloxi Sun-Herald. "I don't want to ruffle any feathers and I want people to respect me. Sometimes I think it's hard for them to let Brett go. They might think that we pay him a lot of money, but he still gives us the best chance to win. I've never been told that, but there are times when I wonder if I'm the odd man out here and they just don't know how to tell me."....

The Bergen County Record reports that Giants offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride has two concerns about Giants RB Brandon Jacobs moving into a starting role: Can he change his style of running, and Can he stay upright for 16 games? "They've encouraged him to be (a power runner)," Gilbride said. "But you're not the change-of-pace guy anymore, hopefully you are the guy. You hope that he would learn that himself as part of the natural process. That's the thing that I'm worried about: Does he have the stamina to stay in there for a whole game and carry the ball 20-to-25 times over 16-17 weeks?"....

Shaun Alexander's claim he may still have a cracked foot doesn't hold much credence with coach Mike Holmgren. A smiling Alexander said on Monday that he thought he would get another X-ray after the minicamp ended, but that he wasn't concerned much with knowing the results. He had practiced through last weekend's three-day, mandatory camp plus Monday's initial day of the voluntary one before the team excused him for the final three days. Holmgren said Thursday that there were no plans for any further exams on Alexander's foot. Late last season, the coach explained doctors had told him Alexander may always have a crack in his foot, but they had determined that the risk of him breaking through the relatively small fissure was remote and thus he could play on it. "He is fine. We X-rayed it after the season was over, how long has it been?" Holmgren said. "You saw him running out here, he is running all over the place."

Arkansas Releases Post-Spring Football Depth Chart

NFL Considers Adding 17th Game to Season

The Texans agreed to a deal with undrafted rookie RB Darius Walker. He will compete for a spot along the RB depth chart with the club....

The Steelers have signed RB Kevan Barlow to a one-year deal, and he'll compete for a roster spot along the Steelers RB depth chart. He is likely being an insurance policy for starter Willie Parker. The Jets released Barlow this offseason after the least-productive season of his career. He ran for a career-low 370 yards with six touchdowns and averaged just 2.8 yards per carry.....

The Titans signed free-agent offensive lineman Marques Ogden and fullback Jonathan Evans and waived defensive tackle Marcus White and undrafted rookies fullback Nic Luc and defensive tackle Adrian Haywood.....

Byron Leftwich practiced with the Jacksonville Jaguars for the first time in nearly seven months Tuesday. He said he has no pain in his ankle and feels healthy. Leftwich missed 15 games the last two seasons because of an injured left ankle. He had surgery last November, more than a month after Del Rio benched him in favor of David Garrard. Del Rio made Leftwich the starter in February, hoping to avoid months of speculation heading into training camp. Leftwich, who expected to return to his starting role when healthy, would like to play every game for the first time in his career. "The worst thing that can happen is to have something happen to me and then boom, they'll say, 'That guy is a bum. He can't do anything,'" Leftwich said. "I know if I'm on that field, people will stop questioning my ability to play the game of football. So I'm going to worry about what I need to do, and what I need to do is make sure I'm out there on that field."....

Giants QB Eli Manning got one of his offseason wishes - receiver Plaxico Burress showed up for voluntary conditioning. Burress, who caught 63 passes for a career-high 10 touchdowns last season. He intends to remain for the rest of the workouts. "I'm not trying to make a statement," Burress said Tuesday after catching passes from Manning. "I want us to be better, and I want him to reach his full potential, which I think would be great. I want to help him out. We're here, we're willing to work."....

The Bears have parted ways with 2005 draft pick WR Airese Currie, who played in one game for the club.

6 Charged In N.J. Muslin Terror Plot

LETS SEE IF THE OLD MEDIA REPORTS THIS STORY CORRECTLY BY USEING THE WORD MUSLIN.

NFL Rookie Reaction

The Associated Press reported late Monday that Seahawks RB Shaun Alexander may still have a break in his left foot, an injury that sidelined him for seven games last season. However, the Seattle Post-Intelligencer responds to the story by reporting that Alexander took part in the club's minicamp over the weekend and will practice with the veterans this week. The team also dismissed the report. Alexander was lighthearted during the interview when he said, "I don't even want to get another X-ray until after this camp. If the X-ray shows it's still cracked, it's like, 'OK, what does that mean?'"....

The Atlanta Falcons released tight end Eric Beverly, who played in 45 games for the team. The 6-foot-3, 300-pound Beverly spent seven seasons with the Detroit Lions as an offensive lineman before signing with the Falcons in 2004. The Falcons then converted him to a blocking tight end. He had one reception for no gain for Atlanta last season. Beverly made seven starts in three seasons with Atlanta. The Falcons chose Martrez Milner, a tight end from Georgia, in the fourth round of the NFL draft last month as a possible backup for starter Alge Crumpler.....

Aside from first-round pick WR Robert Meachem, the Saints' 2007 draft class includes: Kent State CB Usama Young, Akron OG Andy Alleman, Ohio State RB Antonio Pittman, Towson OT Jermon Bushrod, Wingate CB David Jones and Tennessee LB Marvin Mitchell. Of their seven draft picks, two are offensive skill-position players, two are O-linemen and three are defenders. Moreover, four are from small schools (a trend that started with Marques Colston, perhaps?).....

According to the Cleveland Plain Dealer, new Browns QB Brady Quinn threw consecutive balls into a brisk wind that could be described charitably as wounded ducks. Each ball looked to hit a brick wall in midair and plummet, one far short of the intended and uncovered receiver. Quinn compensated on the next pass and overthrew a receiver....

According to the Wisconsin State Journal, the Packers are trying to replace the departed Ahman Green with a handful of RB. Vernand Morency, who carried 96 times for 434 yards and two touchdowns last season after coming over from the Texans in the Samkon Gado trade, is the leading candidate to replace the franchise's second-leading, all-time rusher. But rookie Brandon Jackson took a small step toward competing with Morency with a solid rookie orientation camp. A second-round pick from Nebraska, the 5-foot-10, 212-pound Jackson rushed for 989 yards and eight TDs on 188 carries as a junior last season while also catching 33 passes for 313 yards and two more TDs. He made a good first impression on coach Mike McCarthy with his quickness.....

Aside from top picks RB Adrian Peterson and WR Sidney Rice, the Vikings' 2007 draft class includes: Fresno State CB Marcus McCauley, Texas DE Brian Robison, ECU WR Aundrae Allison, Oklahoma LB Rufus Alexander, Coastal Carolina QB Tyler Thigpen and FIU WR Chandler Williams. ...

According to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, neither Brett Favre nor Aaron Rodgers will be completely ready for the Green Bay Packers' mandatory mini-camp that starts May 18, so third-stringer Ingle Martin will get a good chance to showcase himself. Coach Mike McCarthy said Sunday that Favre would attend the mini-camp but would spend the time rehabilitating his left ankle, which was operated on Feb. 26 to remove bone chips. McCarthy said in March that he didn't expect Favre to take part in the mini-camp but was hopeful he would be able to take part in the organized team activities two weeks after that. Rodgers has been rehabilitating a broken left foot suffered Nov. 19 and is cleared to do some things in the off-season conditioning program. McCarthy said Rodgers was close to being cleared for the mini-camp, but he said he probably wouldn't expose him to a lot of action just to be on the safe side....

Aside from first-round pick WR Dwayne Bow, the Chiefs' 2007 draft class includes: Tennessee DT Turk McBride, N.C. State DT DeMarcus 'Tank' Tyler, Louisville RB Kolby Smith, UCLA PK Justin Medlock, TCU OT Herbert Taylor and Whitworth TE Michael Allan.

Surprise, surprise… The New York Times showing their stripes yet again with a front page article that trashed the newly elected pro-American French president. Nothing new for the Times who regularly report attacks on our troops in the field but rarely report the great progress they've made. Mark said enough is enough and it's high time for the New York Times to take responsibility and expose those who are behind this blatant bias.

Peterson debuts in purple

The Charlotte Observer reports that Panthers WR Steve Smith is OK after leaping for a pass and getting tangled up with a defensive back. He landed awkwardly and stayed on the ground while trainers checked out his left knee. He got up and walked off the field under his own power. "Any time a player goes down, it's scary, especially when it's that guy, 2004 was flashing in front of my eyes," coach John Fox said....

NFL veteran RB Derrick Blaylock agreed to a two-year deal with the Redskins, according to the Washington Post. Blaylock got a tryout with the Redskins' rookies and apparently did enough to earn a spot on the training camp roster. He previously worked with Redskins assistant Al Saunders in Kansas City....

Kicker Billy Cundiff signed a one-year contract with the Atlanta Falcons after playing six games with New Orleans last season. Cundiff will compete with Aaron Elling for the kicking job. The Falcons tried punter Michael Koenen and veteran Morten Andersen at kicker last season. Cundiff missed his only attempt last season with New Orleans and was used primarily on kickoffs. He made 60 of 82 field-goal attempts with Dallas from 2002-05. Cundiff made a record-tying seven field goals in coach Bill Parcells' first victory with Dallas -- a 35-32 win over the Giants on Sept. 15, 2003. Cundiff set a Dallas record with a 56-yard field goal in 2005. He was 23 of 29 for Dallas in 2003 but was released by the Cowboys late in the 2005 season.....

JaMarcus Russell dropped back and fired a pass through tight coverage that hit fellow rookie Johnathan Holland between the 1 and the 8 on his jersey. The top pick with the rocket arm made an immediate impression on the Oakland Raiders in his first practice Friday. Russell's first day of practice showed off the inconsistencies that almost all rookies have when they make the transition to the NFL. He was able to drill spirals through tight coverage, but also fumbled two snaps from center, overthrew Jerry Porter on a deep pass down the sideline and missed the target on some shorter throws. Even though he didn't get a chance to heave the ball 80 yards like he supposedly is able, Russell's strong arm was the talk of the day among his new teammates. "It looks like someone hired a JUGS machine and put a jersey on it," Porter said. "Man, he can throw the ball. I see why he's the first overall."....

Titans rookie RB Chris Henry repeatedly showed off the 4.4-second speed he achieved in the 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine in passing drills. He also displayed soft hands in a catch where he never broke stride, turning his head back over his left shoulder and pulling the ball in for a smooth reception. Henry will compete with LenDale White, the Titans' second-round pick of 2006, as the team looks for a new starter after releasing Travis Henry in March.....

Although Friday's first minicamp wasn't much more than glorified touch football, Chargers QB Philip Rivers ran around without any hint of the foot injury that put him in a cast following San Diego's stunning 24-21 loss to the New England Patriots in their playoff opener. Rivers sprained his right foot in the regular-season finale against Arizona on Dec. 31 and aggravated it in the playoff loss. The injury kept him out of the Pro Bowl. Rivers said he was in a cast for six weeks and in a walking boot after that. "It feels good," Rivers said. "I wouldn't call it 100 percent, but there's no pain. It's a matter of retraining everything."....

Wearing his familiar No. 10, and a shiny orange helmet he had dreamed of buckling on since he was a kid, Quinn practiced for the first time as a pro quarterback as the Browns began a three-day camp for their draft picks and free agents. The 6-foot-3, 232-pounder made some crisp, short throws. He also had a few wobblers, one bad one that caught in the wind and flattened. "It's been awhile," he said. "There's always room for improvement."

NFL NEWS AND NOTES

According to a report in the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, the NFL is considering moving the first round of its annual into prime time on Friday. The remaining rounds would be conducted on Saturday and Sunday. The NFL’s thinking appears to be that carrying the opening round in prime time would mean more viewers. NFL officials also reportedly think it would’t be a bad idea to give teams time to decompress before the second round. The biggest issue with the opening round in the evening would be making sure it could be done in a reasonable amount of time. Last weekend’s first round, for example, took over six hours. Shortening the first round won’t be popular among NFL types as there doesn't seem to be much support to reduce the current opening round time of 15 minutes per picks.

NFL NEWS AND NOTES

The Tacoma News Tribune reports that Seahawks QB Matt Hasselbeck participated in the team's recent minicamp but threw only in individual drills. Coach Mike Holmgren called him "rusty." Hasselbeck is recovering from offseason shoulder surgery.....

Dolphins coach Cam Cameron said that QB Daunte Culpepper, who is rehabbing a reconstructed knee, is "in that 90 percent range." Cameron will not let Culpepper work out on the field until he's fully ready. "He's made progress and again it's the same situation, until he is 100 percent he won't be out there."....

Dolphins coach Cam Cameron liked what he saw from his rookie quarterback, BYU product John Beck. The team's second-round pick, Beck worked out at the team's minicamp recently. "He learned what most of them learn right away," Cameron said. "He let the clock run out twice. That clock is a major factor and major difference for guys coming out of college. He was shocked that that happened. He'll get that corrected. I think for all young guys it's a process. The ball seemed to come out as quickly as we thought it would, which is important. He is going to be one of those guys who is going to get a little bit better everyday."....

The Bengals have signed LB Edgerton Hartwell to a one-year deal, reports Bengals.com. Hartwell previously started for the Falcons in Atlanta, but was banged up and only played in 13 games over two seasons.

NFL NEWS AND NOTES

NFL Network reports that free-agent PK Billy Cundiff is being chased by the Giants and Falcons, two teams that have yet to hire a legitimate starting kicker. The Giants have already worked out Cundiff, and the Falcons are bringing him in for a workout of their own.....

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel cites an NFL source close to Keyshawn Johnson as saying the Packers are taking a look at signing the veteran wideout. "I think their interest is legitimate," the source said. The Giants have also been named as a potential suitor for Johnson, who was released by the Panthers following the NFL draft.....

Free agent Josh Scobey signed with the Bills on Thursday, providing Buffalo depth at running back and special teams. Scobey is a five-year NFL veteran who appeared in 12 games last season with Seattle before breaking his arm against Denver on Dec. 3. He played mostly on special teams, returning 17 kickoffs for 315 yards and adding 12 special teams tackles. Scobey played two seasons with Seattle after spending his first three with Arizona, which selected him in the sixth round of the 2002 draft. He has had limited action at running back, getting 27 carries for 89 yards rushing, all in 2004 with the Cardinals. The Bills value Scobey's special teams ability. He will also compete for a backup running back spot in Buffalo behind first-round draft pick Marshawn Lynch, who was selected 12th overall in Saturday's draft, and veteran backup Anthony Thomas.....

The Steelers have announced the release of backup TE Tim Euhus, who became expendable when the club drafted Matt Spaeth in the third round of the 2007 NFL Draft. Spaeth is a monster (6-foot-7, 267 pounds) who set receiving records at Minnesota and is more of a receiver than a blocker.

IF THE CUT AND RUN DEMOCRATS GET THEIR WAY

HISTORY WILL REPEAT ITSELF...

NFL NEWS AND NOTES

The New York Daily News reports that the Giants could be interested in WR Keyshawn Johnson, who was released by the Panthers. The Giants went after Johnson last offseason and failed to get him. "Well, let's put it this way," Coughlin said on Sirius NFL Radio. "We study every player that's available and we'll do that again in light of the fact that Keyshawn is available. We weren't necessarily thinking that he would be. Of course we made a move in the draft to help solidify that position as well, so we'll take a look at that like we do everything else."....

Mike Williams heard all the disparaging comments about his work ethic, his weight and his ability as he wallowed on the bench with the Detroit Lions. Williams takes some blame for being late to meetings and clashing with coaches. But whatever the other reasons for his failure in Detroit (he was labeled as out of shape), he knows that the draft-day trade to Oakland gives him what could be a final chance to prove himself as an NFL receiver. The deal reunites Williams with Raiders coach Lane Kiffin, who persuaded Williams to leave Florida to attend Southern California and then coached him for two years with the Trojans. "This is Mike's chance," Kiffin said. "However you want to phrase it, he's blown a chance. I think that he would tell you the same thing. Whether he feels it was his fault or not, it was an opportunity that didn't work out the way it could. There are a lot of doubters."....

Seahawks franchise player Josh Brown has signed his tender offer worth $2,078,000 - the average of the top five paid kickers in the NFL - after the team could not reach a long-term deal with him. The Seahawks designated Brown as their franchise player in February, to keep from losing one of the NFL's best clutch kickers as a free agent. Another team would have had to surrender two first-round draft choices to Seattle had it signed him. Brown won four games last season in the final seconds. Some of his teammates called him their team's MVP in 2006.

NFL NEWS AND NOTES

The St. Petersburg Times reports that the Panthers have cut veteran WR Keyshawn Johnson. "They said they wanted to get younger," Johnson said. "That's fine with me. I'd like to go somewhere and help someone win another Super Bowl." Johnson finished out 2006 with 70 catches, 815 yards and four touchdowns along with a four-yard TD run and one pass attempted, and intercepted.....

The San Diego Union-Tribune reports that Chargers GM A.J. Smith has taken RB Michael Turner off the trading block. Smith expects Turner to spend 2007 backing up LaDainian Tomlinson in San Diego. "That's it," Smith said. "It's over ... I didn't want to be fooling around with this until October. ... Even if you have a guy blow out a knee in training camp, don't call."....

The Dolphins waived LB Bobby Iwuchukwu, WR/QB Marcus Vick and DT Manuel Wright on Tuesday.....

Defensive tackle Ryan Sims, the sixth overall pick in the 2002 draft, was traded by Kansas City to Tampa Bay Tuesday for an undisclosed draft choice. Sims was a huge disappointment with the Chiefs, often overweight and often injured. The Chiefs also released defensive end Eric Hicks on Tuesday, three days after taking defensive lineman Claude "Turk" McBride in the second round of the NFL draft. Hicks, who made the Chiefs' roster as an undrafted free agent out of Maryland in 1998, has appeared in 128 games with 104 starts over nine seasons.....

The Kansas City Star reports that Chiefs QB Trent Green's agent says his client won't return to the club even if he's not traded or released. "Trent's not going to be returning," Jim Steiner said. "They've said Brodie Croyle is going to be the No. 1 or No. 2 quarterback. They brought back Damon Huard. They've told Trent they want to get younger. So the Chiefs determined that, not Trent. That's not going to happen. It's grossly unfair of the Chiefs to keep Trent on their roster." Green is scheduled to make $7.2 million this season, and he's not expected to restructure that number unless he is traded. GM Carl Peterson says the Chiefs can afford Green's salary and doesn't plan on releasing him or trading him for unfair compensation....

The Buccaneers released CB Juran Bolden and three other players on Monday. Bolden, who has played with six teams during a nine-year NFL career, signed with the Bucs as a free agent in March 2005. He appeared in 32 games over the past two seasons, including 13 starts, and had three interceptions and one sack. Also released were safety Tra Boger, long snapper Adam Johnson and defensive tackle Kenny Smith. The club withdrew a tender offer to restricted free agent Blue Adams, meaning the fourth-year safety is now an unrestricted free agent.
