NFL Delays Ricky Williams' Return

Numerous publications report Sunday that QB Brett Favre is unhappy with the Packers' handling of trying to trade for Randy Moss and even requested a trade. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports Favre knew what the parameters of the trade between the Packers and Raiders would have been for Moss and was willing to take a pay cut to help bring Moss to Green Bay. FOX Sports reports that Favre asked to be traded out of town, then admitted he didn't really want that. "I just want to win; maybe I see things the wrong way," he told the Biloxi Sun-Herald. "I don't want to ruffle any feathers and I want people to respect me. Sometimes I think it's hard for them to let Brett go. They might think that we pay him a lot of money, but he still gives us the best chance to win. I've never been told that, but there are times when I wonder if I'm the odd man out here and they just don't know how to tell me."....

The Bergen County Record reports that Giants offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride has two concerns about Giants RB Brandon Jacobs moving into a starting role: Can he change his style of running, and Can he stay upright for 16 games? "They've encouraged him to be (a power runner)," Gilbride said. "But you're not the change-of-pace guy anymore, hopefully you are the guy. You hope that he would learn that himself as part of the natural process. That's the thing that I'm worried about: Does he have the stamina to stay in there for a whole game and carry the ball 20-to-25 times over 16-17 weeks?"....

Shaun Alexander's claim he may still have a cracked foot doesn't hold much credence with coach Mike Holmgren. A smiling Alexander said on Monday that he thought he would get another X-ray after the minicamp ended, but that he wasn't concerned much with knowing the results. He had practiced through last weekend's three-day, mandatory camp plus Monday's initial day of the voluntary one before the team excused him for the final three days. Holmgren said Thursday that there were no plans for any further exams on Alexander's foot. Late last season, the coach explained doctors had told him Alexander may always have a crack in his foot, but they had determined that the risk of him breaking through the relatively small fissure was remote and thus he could play on it. "He is fine. We X-rayed it after the season was over, how long has it been?" Holmgren said. "You saw him running out here, he is running all over the place."

The Steelers have signed RB Kevan Barlow to a one-year deal, and he'll compete for a roster spot along the Steelers RB depth chart. He is likely being an insurance policy for starter Willie Parker. The Jets released Barlow this offseason after the least-productive season of his career. He ran for a career-low 370 yards with six touchdowns and averaged just 2.8 yards per carry.....

The Titans signed free-agent offensive lineman Marques Ogden and fullback Jonathan Evans and waived defensive tackle Marcus White and undrafted rookies fullback Nic Luc and defensive tackle Adrian Haywood.....

Byron Leftwich practiced with the Jacksonville Jaguars for the first time in nearly seven months Tuesday. He said he has no pain in his ankle and feels healthy. Leftwich missed 15 games the last two seasons because of an injured left ankle. He had surgery last November, more than a month after Del Rio benched him in favor of David Garrard. Del Rio made Leftwich the starter in February, hoping to avoid months of speculation heading into training camp. Leftwich, who expected to return to his starting role when healthy, would like to play every game for the first time in his career. "The worst thing that can happen is to have something happen to me and then boom, they'll say, 'That guy is a bum. He can't do anything,'" Leftwich said. "I know if I'm on that field, people will stop questioning my ability to play the game of football. So I'm going to worry about what I need to do, and what I need to do is make sure I'm out there on that field."....

Giants QB Eli Manning got one of his offseason wishes - receiver Plaxico Burress showed up for voluntary conditioning. Burress, who caught 63 passes for a career-high 10 touchdowns last season. He intends to remain for the rest of the workouts. "I'm not trying to make a statement," Burress said Tuesday after catching passes from Manning. "I want us to be better, and I want him to reach his full potential, which I think would be great. I want to help him out. We're here, we're willing to work."....

NFL Rookie Reaction

The Associated Press reported late Monday that Seahawks RB Shaun Alexander may still have a break in his left foot, an injury that sidelined him for seven games last season. However, the Seattle Post-Intelligencer responds to the story by reporting that Alexander took part in the club's minicamp over the weekend and will practice with the veterans this week. The team also dismissed the report. Alexander was lighthearted during the interview when he said, "I don't even want to get another X-ray until after this camp. If the X-ray shows it's still cracked, it's like, 'OK, what does that mean?'"....

The Atlanta Falcons released tight end Eric Beverly, who played in 45 games for the team. The 6-foot-3, 300-pound Beverly spent seven seasons with the Detroit Lions as an offensive lineman before signing with the Falcons in 2004. The Falcons then converted him to a blocking tight end. He had one reception for no gain for Atlanta last season. Beverly made seven starts in three seasons with Atlanta. The Falcons chose Martrez Milner, a tight end from Georgia, in the fourth round of the NFL draft last month as a possible backup for starter Alge Crumpler.....

Aside from first-round pick WR Robert Meachem, the Saints' 2007 draft class includes: Kent State CB Usama Young, Akron OG Andy Alleman, Ohio State RB Antonio Pittman, Towson OT Jermon Bushrod, Wingate CB David Jones and Tennessee LB Marvin Mitchell. Of their seven draft picks, two are offensive skill-position players, two are O-linemen and three are defenders. Moreover, four are from small schools (a trend that started with Marques Colston, perhaps?).....

According to the Cleveland Plain Dealer, new Browns QB Brady Quinn threw consecutive balls into a brisk wind that could be described charitably as wounded ducks. Each ball looked to hit a brick wall in midair and plummet, one far short of the intended and uncovered receiver. Quinn compensated on the next pass and overthrew a receiver....

According to the Wisconsin State Journal, the Packers are trying to replace the departed Ahman Green with a handful of RB. Vernand Morency, who carried 96 times for 434 yards and two touchdowns last season after coming over from the Texans in the Samkon Gado trade, is the leading candidate to replace the franchise's second-leading, all-time rusher. But rookie Brandon Jackson took a small step toward competing with Morency with a solid rookie orientation camp. A second-round pick from Nebraska, the 5-foot-10, 212-pound Jackson rushed for 989 yards and eight TDs on 188 carries as a junior last season while also catching 33 passes for 313 yards and two more TDs. He made a good first impression on coach Mike McCarthy with his quickness.....

According to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, neither Brett Favre nor Aaron Rodgers will be completely ready for the Green Bay Packers' mandatory mini-camp that starts May 18, so third-stringer Ingle Martin will get a good chance to showcase himself. Coach Mike McCarthy said Sunday that Favre would attend the mini-camp but would spend the time rehabilitating his left ankle, which was operated on Feb. 26 to remove bone chips. McCarthy said in March that he didn't expect Favre to take part in the mini-camp but was hopeful he would be able to take part in the organized team activities two weeks after that. Rodgers has been rehabilitating a broken left foot suffered Nov. 19 and is cleared to do some things in the off-season conditioning program. McCarthy said Rodgers was close to being cleared for the mini-camp, but he said he probably wouldn't expose him to a lot of action just to be on the safe side....

Aside from first-round pick WR Dwayne Bow, the Chiefs' 2007 draft class includes: Tennessee DT Turk McBride, N.C. State DT DeMarcus 'Tank' Tyler, Louisville RB Kolby Smith, UCLA PK Justin Medlock, TCU OT Herbert Taylor and Whitworth TE Michael Allan.
