WEEK 16

After Oakland lost 20-9 to Kansas City last evening, the "pressure" will be back on Detroit later this afternoon as the race to see which of the two teams ends up with the #1 pick at the 2007 draft goes down to the wire. It won't be easy for the Lions today though as Detroit, which came into the weekend sitting on the first pick overall, has a home date with 12-2 Chicago. And while there likely won’t be much change to the very top of the 2007 draft board as a result of this weekend’s action, there will be some reshuffling among other potential top 10 picks as a number of teams with picks 3 thru 10 play each other. Tampa Bay, for example, which would pick 3rd if the draft were held today, will be at #6 Cleveland, while #4 Arizona will be at #10 San Francisco and #7 Washington is at #8 St. Louis. We’ll have the full, updated 2007 draft selection order with just a week to go after Monday’s Christmas Day doubleheader.....

TENNESSEE TITANS (7-7) AT BUFFALO BILLS (7-7) 1:00 PM EST

TITANS

Saturday Update: The Titans make their first trip to Buffalo since 2000 and only P Craig Hentrichand starting G Benji Olson remain from that team on the current roster.

The Bills have given up just 13 points in their last two games and we feel the Titan passing game will struggle against them tomorrow.

The Bills have struggled to stop the run all year and they face a tough task tomorrow trying to stop a scorned running back. The Bills basically gave up on RB Travis Henry (ankle-questionable) when they drafted RB Willis McGahee and Henry is poised to crack the 1,000-yard rushing mark against his former team. Henry has plenty of incentive as he's in the midst of trying to get a new deal from his team.

Friday Update: Starting RB Travis Henry (ankle-questionable) didn't practice Wednesday, increased his workload Thursday and rested for most of Friday's session, but is expected to start against his former team. Rookie RB LenDale White is Henry's backup and former starter Chris Brown has been active the last two weeks when Henry and White have both missed some practice time.

Starting WR Drew Bennett (knee-questionable) was held out of practice Wednesday and Thursday but took part Friday and is expected to start.

"Drew will be fine," said head coach Jeff Fisher said after Friday's practice. "Drew worked himself back into practice today."

Starting TE Bo Scaife (ankle) missed practice Friday for the third straight day and remains questionable to play. Backup TE Ben Hartsock started for him last week.

"Bo's working good inside," said Fisher. "We'll warm Bo up before kickoff and see how he is."

Starting CB Reynaldo Hill (ankle-questionable) practiced fully Friday after missing a portion of Thursday workout when he had his ankle stepped on. He's expected to start but was added to the injury report since he sat out a portion of practice Thursday.

Starting MLB Peter Sirmon (knee-questionable) was limited this week but fully participated Friday and is still expected to start. Fourth-round pick Stephen Tulloch filled in during practice and last Sunday after Sirmon went down.

Starting DE Travis LaBoy (knee) is also listed as questionable. He missed parts of Wednesday and Thursday's workouts but got a full day of work in on Friday.

Also listed as questionable are backup LBs Ken Amato (neck) and Colby Bockwoldt (shoulder), P Craig Hentrich (back), and backup TE Cooper Wallace (thigh). Wallace, Amato, and Bockwoldt practiced fully this week and Hentrich rested Thursday and Friday but will still punt Sunday.

BILLS

Saturday Update: Over his last five games, starting QB J.P. Losman has 10 TD passes and 4 INTs. The one noticeable thing about his play over that span has been his accuracy on deep to intermediate passes. Now if they can just get him some help at receiver for next season.

Friday Update: #3 QB Craig Nall (illness-probable) practiced Friday and is expected to be available Sunday if needed.

Starting FB Daimon Shelton (questionable-head) missed practice Friday and isn't expected to play. Backup TE Brad Cieslak will fill in.

Starting WR Peerless Price (questionable-thigh) practiced again Friday and is expected to start.

Starting SLB Takeo Spikes (questionable-ankle) practiced again Friday and is expected to start.

Backup LB John DiGiorgio (questionable-ankle) practiced all week and should be available for special teams duty Sunday.


NEW ORLEANS SAINTS (9-5) AT NEW YORK GIANTS (7-7) 1:00 PM EST

SAINTS

Saturday Update: The Giant pass defense has fallen to 28th in the NFL and they'll be looking to avoid their 4th straight home loss. Tough matchup for the Giants as New Orleans has the league's top passing offense. The Saints should throw the ball well again especially with very mild temperatures expected at the Meadowlands.

If the Saints win their last two games they'll earn a first-round bye which would be huge because they'd be in a position to play a home playoff game and then have the opportunity to play for the right to go to the Super Bowl.

Friday Update: #2 QB Jamie Martin (back) was removed from the injury report Friday and will be available if needed on Sunday. Martin was initially listed as probable this week after resting Wednesday.

Starting WR Joe Horn (groin-doubtful) was downgraded Friday from questionable and isn't expected to play. Horn has did light running this week but didn't take part in any on-field drills. Backup WR Terrance Copper is expected to start with #3 WR Devery Henderson splitting time with him.

Horn, who tried playing Dec. 3 but came out early in the game, has been inactive the last two weeks but is confident he'll be available for the playoffs. He also missed the first two games of November with a strained groin but started in the next three contests after that span.

Starting TE Mark Campbell (knee-questionable) practiced Thursday and Friday after sitting out Wednesday and should be able to start.

Starting SS Omar Stoutmire (knee-doubtful) was also downgraded from questionable on Friday. He still hasn't practiced since getting hurt two weeks ago and backup S Steve Gleason will likely start for him again Sunday.

GIANTS

Saturday Update: It's kind of fitting that starting RB Tiki Barber will play his last home game against the coach who helped make him an every down back. Sean Payton, was calling the plays as the Giant offensive coordinator when Barber became the Giants full-time back in 2000 and he helped devise the gameplans, along with Jim Fassel, that helped make Barber a star. Tomorrow, Payton will try to stop the monster he helped create.

Barber is the Giants' all-time leading rusher. He's rushed 1,140 times for 5,318 yards and 30 touchdowns. He's also caught 285 passes for 2,528 yards and seven touchdowns, and has returned 84 kickoffs and punts.

Friday Update: #2 RB Brandon Jacobs (ankle-questionable) returned to practice Friday and is expected to play.

Starting G Chris Snee (illness-probable) practiced Friday and is expected to start.

Starting OLT Luke Petitgout (fibula) remains out with backup OT Bob Whitfield starting again for him.

The Giants got good news Friday when starting C Shaun O'Hara returned to practice for the first time since injuring his ankle two weeks ago.

"He did all right," head coach Tom Coughlin said. "I'm sure he was out there trying to test it out and find out how he felt. I think he did okay and we'll see when he comes in here and gets treatment again, and then tomorrow."

O'Hara was more optimistic than his head coach was.

"With me practicing today, our goal was to get ready for Sunday," O'Hara said. "That's how I'm preparing. Obviously, it's the head coach's call, but I feel comfortable with everything that's gone on."

Backup OL Rich Seubert (shin-doubtful) missed practice again Friday and won't play. Backup OL Grey Ruegamer would start for O'Hara if needed.

Starting DE Michael Strahan (foot-questionable) practiced again Friday and is expected to start.

Starting CB Corey Webster (toe-questionable) practiced again Thursday but may not start. Either he or backup CB R.W. McQuarters will start.


CAROLINA PANTHERS (6-8) AT ATLANTA FALCONS (7-7) 1:00 PM EST

Saturday Update: Starting QB Jake Delhomme (right thumb-questionable) will miss his third straight game with a sprained thumb and backup QB Chris Weinke will start again. Here's a scary stat. Weinke has lost 18 straight starts. If the game gets out of hand, they could get a look at rookie QB Brett Basanez.

Head coach John Fox spent the week trying to defend offensive coordinator Dan Henning. That's tough to do when your offense has scored the second fewest points in the NFC this year. We should mention that the team lost three starters on the offensive line (LT Travelle Wharton, LG Mike Wahle, and C Justin Hartwig) along the way.

Friday Update: Starting QB Jake Delhomme (right thumb-questionable) missed practice again Friday and was downgraded to doubtful and won't likely dress for the game. Backup QB Chris Weinke (chest-probable) practiced again Friday and will start for him.

Backup RB Nick Goings (shoulder-probable) practiced again Friday and is expected to play.

#3 WR Drew Carter (ankle) missed practice again Friday and was downgraded to doubtful and won't be able to play. Rookie WR Taye Biddle (knee-questionable) practiced again Friday and should be able to play.

Starting TE Kris Mangum (hip-questionable) was able to practice Friday but his status remains a game day decision. Backup TE Michael Gaines would start again if needed.

Dime CB Dion Byrum (thigh-doubtful) missed practice again Friday and will be inactive Sunday.

FALCONS

Saturday Update: Starting DE John Abraham (thumb) is expected to try to give it a go tomorrow. He's never been one to play hurt so we'll see how long he lasts if he does indeed play. He was upgraded to probable after Friday's practice.

There was some good debate this week about whether or not starting QB Michael Vick should have gone to the Pro Bowl ahead of QB Tony Romo. In Vick's defense, his wide receivers must have dropped five TD passes this year but then again so has WR Terrell Owens.

Friday Update: Starting QB Michael Vick (groin-probable) took his usual allotment of snaps Friday and is expected to start Sunday. Backup QB Matt Schaub took most of the first-team reps Wednesday, but Vick increased his workload as the week progressed.

Starting DE John Abraham (thumb) remains questionable but he practiced Friday for the first time this week and will play Sunday with a cast. He tore ligaments in his left thumb late in Saturday night's first half but was able to play after halftime and had a pin surgically implanted in the thumb Monday.

Former starting CB Jason Webster (torn groin muscle) was upgraded Friday from questionable to probable after practicing for a third straight day. He suffered his injury almost two months ago and it's yet to be seen whether Webster is fit enough to play in game-action. Regardless of his status, rookie CB Jimmy Williams and CB/KR/PR Allen Rossum will continue to log significant time, with the taller, more physical Williams likely starting to match up with Panther WR Keyshawn Johnson.

Six other starters remain listed probable, including starting RB Warrick Dunn (left calf), DT Grady Jackson (knee), CB DeAngelo Hall (left knee), MLB Ed Hartwell (knee), DT Rod Coleman (knee), and ORT Todd Weiner (knee). All are expected to be available for the game in their normal roles.

Dunn, who returned fully to practice Thursday and Friday after resting Wednesday, was questionable last week with his injury, suffered Dec. 10, but he played most of the game vs. the Cowboys and had 18 carries for 56 yards. Jackson, Hartwell, Coleman, and Weiner have sat out on Wednesday in many of the past weeks and all practiced Thursday and Friday. Hall didn't practice much last week, but practiced each day this week and will start.

Also listed as probable are backup DT Jonathan Babineaux (knee) rookie RBJerious Norwood (right knee).

Babineaux rested Wednesday but participated fully the past two days while Norwood was back fully in practice this week. He was inactive Saturday night when it was deemed that he was still too stiff in pre-game warm-ups to be effective, but he is improved this week and should see action.

Not listed on the injury report is backup FB Fred McCrary, who disclosed this week that he has been playing for several weeks with torn cartilage in his knee. The veteran isn't featured as a runner or pass catcher but is a physical lead blocker.


WASHINGTON REDSKINS (5-9) AT ST. LOUIS RAMS (6-8) 1:00 PM EST

Saturday Update: In the midst of a bad season, the team has found a good story with RB Ladell Betts who jus needs 67 yards for the first 1,000 yard season of his career.

“We don’t talk a lot about that. I know it is important to Ladell. It would be important for any back. It is a major deal particularly seeing how he got it. He got 1,000 yards alternating carries at the start of the year and now he has gotten hot at the end of the year. When we were talking about trying to get him resigned he and I would talk about the football end of it and he brought that up. He said he was excited about having the opportunity to do it," head coach Joe Gibbs said.

The Rams have the league's 31st rated run defense and there's no reason why Betts shouldn't run all over them tomorrow. Tomorrow's game in St. Louis is being blacked out. Fans better be careful that Georgia doesn't move the team back to Los Angeles!

Former Ram S Adam Archuleta is looking forward to returning to St. Louis but how much action he actually sees against his former team is still uncertain. Since being replaced as a starter on defense Archuleta hasn't seen any time on defense in four weeks. That's not what the Redskins were hoping for when they signed him away from the Rams by offering him a $30 million contract this year. Brilliant! Every one knows that he was terrible in coverage for the Rams yet Washington seemed to ignore that.

Friday Update: Starting OLT Chris Samuels (knee-probable) practiced again Friday and is expected to start Sunday against the Rams. Samuels had taken Wednesday off to rest his knee.

Starting ORT Jon Jansen (calf) practiced again Friday and is expected to be back in the lineup after missing the Saints game last weekend. Jansen practiced Thursday for the first time since Dec. 8 and was upgraded from questionable to probable for Sunday.

Starting C Casey Rabach (hand-probable) practiced for a second straight day and is expected to start. Rabach continues to play through a broken left hand, his non-snapping hand. He did not re-aggravate the injury during the Saints game.

On defense, starting SLB Marcus Washington (knee) was downgraded to out on Friday after missing practice for a third consecutive day. He hasn't been able to practice due to swelling in a knee he bruised late in last Sunday's game at New Orleans.

Head coach Joe Gibbs says the medical team is considering its options with regard to Washington's health, especially with just one game remaining after this weekend. IR could certainly be an option.

"The guys are taking a real long hard look at that. We will see what happens. We will let the medical team continue to work on what is best for him. He still has swelling in it," Gibbs said.

Backup OLB Jeff Posey is expected to start in place of Washington. However, the team could shift starting WLB Warrick Holdman to the strong side and give rookie LB Rocky McIntosh extended playing time. McIntosh saw action at weak-side during last Sunday's game.

Washington has missed just one game with an injury in his seven seasons and Gibbs is concerned about the impact of his absence.

"What concerns me is the energy he brings to it. A lot of our players play off of Marcus' excitement. We are going to play our first game without him. It is a big deal for us. We will have to have some guys step up and really play well and supply some of the energy and enthusiasm that he does," Gibbs said.

Starting MLB Lemar Marshall (knee-probable) practiced again Friday and is expected to start. He was held out Wednesday to rest an ailing knee injury.

RAMS

Saturday Update: Look for the team to address the interior of their offensive line next season with two new starters.

G Adam Timmerman turns 36 this August and C Andy McCollum in June.

Friday Update: #2 RB Stephen Davis (hand) practiced again Friday and was removed from injury report and will play.

Starting FB Paul Smith (neck) missed practice again Friday and was downgraded to out. Backup FB Madison Hedgecock starts for him.

Starting WR Torry Holt (knee-probable) practiced again Friday and is expected to start.

Starting ORT Alex Barron (toe) was removed from the injury report Friday and will start.

Veteran G Adam Timmerman (ribs-questionable) practiced again Friday and if he plays, it will be as a backup.

"My inclination is, just based on the reps, is to leave it the way we had it, but have him available this game as opposed to not," said head coach Scott Linehan after Friday's practice.

Brett Romberg will start again at center with Richie Incognito (toe-probable) starting at G.

P Matt Turk (neck) was removed from the injury report Friday and will start.

Starting DE Victor Adeyanju (forearm) practiced Friday but remains questionable to play. Backup DE Brandon Green has been starting for him.

"Victor looks real promising. Good chance he'll be available. I think we'll probably make that decision today. (Backup S) Jerome Carter (ankle-questionable) actually looked better today than he did on Wednesday; actually yesterday and today had good days, so he'll be available as well," the head coach said.

Starting WLB Will Witherspoon (knee-probable) practiced Friday and is expected to start.

Saturday Update: As of Saturday evening, the team plans for rookie RB Joseph Addai (ankle-questionable) to play but they didn't upgrade his status.

The team made several changes to their injury report on Saturday.

Backup TE Bryan Fletcher (quadriceps) was upgraded from questionable to probable.

Backup DT Darrell Reid (hand) was upgraded from questionable to probable.

Backup SLB Gilbert Gardner (knee) was upgraded from questionable to probable.

Starting SS Antoine Bethea (shoulder) was upgraded from questionable to probable.

Starting FS Bob Sanders (knee) was downgraded from questionable to out.

Backup DB Marlin Jackson (shoulder) was upgraded from questionable to probable.

Friday Update: Rookie RB Joseph Addai (low ankle sprain-questionable) returned to practice Friday after his injured ankle made improvement. He's expected to play.

"Joseph Addai worked and did well," the head coach Tony Dungy said after Friday's practice.

Addai, who is from Houston, leads all rookie running backs with 917 rushing yards. He needs 83 more yards to become the fourth rookie in team history to surpass the 1,000 yard mark (joining Edgerrin James, 1,553, Marshall Faulk, 1,282, and Dominic Rhodes, 1,104).

If he were to go over the 1,000 yard rushing mark, it would be Addai's first 1,000 yard year since his senior year of high school. He had 1,429 yards on 159 carries and 26 touchdowns as a senior. Addai's 911 yards at LSU last season was his collegiate single-season high.

"My ankle feels better now," Addai said Friday. "They were being patient with me and they just wanted me to rest (the ankle). But I feel like I'll be playing this week. We've been taking it slow, but it's been getting better day-by-day."

Sunday's trip back to Houston will be a special one for Addai, who hasn't played in a game in his home town since he left to attend college four years ago.

"It's always good to be playing at home in front of your family, especially on Christmas Eve. So it's going to mean a lot to me to be playing back at home," he said.

Needing only 83 yards to reach the 1,000 yard mark is sure to add even more to that excitement of his return trip to Houston, according to Addai.

"That would be nice for me to get that," he said. "But the biggest thing is still working on the small things and trying to get better and win the game. That's what we're trying to do and if I get 83 yards out that, I'll be happy about it."

#3 WR Ricky Proehl (hamstring-questionable) didn't practice Friday and his status is considered a game day decision. Backup WR Aaron Moorehead would see more playing time if he can't play as well as backup TE Ben Utecht.

Backup TE Bryan Fletcher (quadriceps-questionable) practiced again Friday and is expected to play.

Starting G Ryan Lilja (knee) was rested Friday but is expected to start.

Backup DT Darrell Reid (hand-questionable) practiced all week and is expected to play.

Saturday Update: Starting TE Owen Daniels (shoulder-questionable) has been dealing with a sore shoulder for several weeks and he didn't practice at all this week. If he's inactive, veteran TE Jeb Putzier will handle the receiving role and TE Mark Bruener will handling his usual blocking role. Look for Putzier to be playing elsewhere next season with the Jets as a possible destination.

The Texans are losing their offensive coordinator to the head coaching ranks. Troy Calhoun will be the next head coach at the Air Force academy.

``Troy was coach DeBerry's handpicked choice to replace him,'' said head coach Gary Kubiak. ``This is a great opportunity for Troy. He's a hell of a coach and a great person, and we're going to miss him. But this is his alma mater and a great institution. I know he's going to do very well.''

Assistant Head Coach/Offense Mike Sherman is the favorite to replace him.

Backup DT Lional Dalton (neck) and backup WR/KR Jerome Mathis (hamstring) were placed on IR Saturday.

Rookie CB John Walker and DT Tim Buhlman were signed off of the practice squad to replace them on the active roster.

Saturday Update: While backup OT Adam Terry is a decent young player, let's not minimize the loss of starting OLT Jonathan Ogden (toe), who will miss this game because of turf toe. The Steelers will be pinning their ears back in hopes of exacting some revenge for the beating their quarterback took against Baltimore earlier this year and they won't ease up on Steve McNair.

Friday Update: Starting WR Derrick Mason (thigh) practiced Friday and was upgraded to probable Friday and is expected to start.

Starting WR Mark Clayton (chest) practiced Friday and was upgraded to probable and is expected to start.

"I landed on my back the other day at practice real hard diving for a ball," he said Friday. "It feels fine now."

Starting TE Todd Heap (thigh-questionable) did some limited practicing Friday but is expected to start. #2 TE Daniel Wilcox (knee/back-questionable) was limited again in practice Friday but should be able to play.

Starting OLT Jonathan Ogden (toe) was downgraded to doubtful Friday after missing practice again and isn't expected to play

"That toe's not looking good," head coach Brian Billick said Friday.

"If Jonathan could play, he would play," starting C Mike Flynn said. "He's sore, and you don't want to hurt it any worse. He'll be back next week and definitely back for the playoffs. There's no need to push it. It would be one thing if maybe we needed this game to get into the playoffs and he could try to do something Sunday before the game. But we knew going into this week that he wouldn't be playing. (Backup OT) Adam (Terry) is going to do a good job. It's not going to change our game plan. He'll be fine. He's played before against good players. He's athletic. The biggest thing is getting used to playing again. After the first series, he should be fine."

Starting CB Samari Rolle (neck stinger) was limited Friday but was upgraded to probable and is expected to start.

Backup S Gerome Sapp (thigh) practiced Friday and was upgraded to probable and is expected to play.

STEELERS

Saturday Update: Starting SS Troy Polamalu (knee-probable) practiced all week and is expected back in the lineup after missing three games. The Steelers will be without starting ORT Max Starks, but he's probably their weakest link on the line. The really like Willie Colon, who is a rookie out of Hoftsra. Can you think of any other rookies from Hoftsra playing in the league? Head coach Bill Cowher can only hope he looks half as good as his former teammate WR Marques Colston.

Friday Update: Starting ORT Max Starks (knee) is out. Rookie OL Willie Colon starts for him.

Starting C Jeff Hartings (knee-probable) practiced again Friday and is expected to start.

Backup ILB Clint Kreiwaldt (neck-probable) returned to practice Friday and is expected to play.

TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS (3-11) AT CLEVELAND BROWNS (4-10) 1:00 PM EST

Saturday Update: Need a last minute starter at RB this week or a flex player? Why not pickup Michael Pittman who will start in place of Cadillac Williams? The Browns have the league's 30th ranked defense against the run but Pittman at least will get a decent amount of touches.

QB Tim Rattay may also surprise by having a good day.

We could see a lot of rookie WR Maurice Stovall Sunday in place of veteran WR Ike Hilliard as the team wants to get a good look at him over the final two games.

Friday Update: Starting RB Cadillac Williams (foot) missed practice again on Friday and was downgraded to doubtful. He will likely miss his first game of 2006. He has been walking around with a protective boot on his right foot, which he injured in the second half of last week's game against the Bears.

"There's a doubtful chance that he'll play," head coach Jon Gruden said Friday.

Williams leads the team with 225 carries for 798 yards and one touchdown. He is fifth on the team in receiving (30 catches, 196 yards). He needs 24 rushing yards to reach 2,000 for his career.

Last year, his rookie season, Williams missed two games and parts of two others with a stubborn unrelated foot injury.

Backup RB Michael Pittman is expected to start with backup RB Earnest Graham likely playing a bigger role. Starting FB Mike Alstott likely would become a factor, too.

"We'll go with Pittman and Earnest and Alstott," said Gruden in discussing his other options. "Those guys will get the brunt of the work. Hopefully we can run the ball well enough to get all those guys involved. But I'm sure Cleveland has plans of stopping the run."

The absence of the team's leading rusher will certainly not help veteran QB Tim Rattay, who will make his first start as a member of the Buccaneers.

Elsewhere on the injury front, #2 TE Alex Smith (ankle), starting LCB Phillip Buchanon (groin-questionable), and backup CB Torrie Cox (neck) were all removed from the injury report and will be available in all their normal roles.

Nickel CB Juran Bolden (quadriceps-questionable) was back on the practice field Friday after missing the previous two days. He figures to fill his usual role on Sunday.

Backup CB Alan Zemaitis (shoulder-questionable) practiced again Friday. He has been inactive for each of their first 14 games.

Backup WLB Jamie Winborn (knee-questionable) was back at practice on Friday after missing the previous two days. He is expected to be available for duty on Sunday.

BROWNS

Saturday Update: Starting WR Joe Jurevicius (concussion-questionable) practiced and will play against his former team. Jurevicius was a big part of Tampa's Super Bowl championship team before being cut as a salary cap casualty in March of 2005. He spent last season in Seattle where he got to play in another Super Bowl but signed with Cleveland because that's the team he grew up rooting for and he wanted to return home.

While the team will likely start backup LB Chaun Thompson for ILB Andra Davis (concussion-doubtful), backup LB Mason Unck (groin-questionable) may also see some time there.

Friday Update: Starting QB Charlie Frye (wrist-questionable) missed practice again Friday and won't play. Backup QB Derek Anderson starts again for him again.

Starting RB Reuben Droughns (foot) practiced again Friday and was removed from the injury report and will start. Rookie RB Jerome Harrison will back up Droughns.

CHICAGO BEARS (12-2) AT DETROIT LIONS (2-12) 1:00 PM EST

Saturday Update: We're told this evening that the coaches plan to play the starters into the third quarter which they feel is just enough to keep them sharp. Last year, they rested all the starters in the final game of the season at the Vikings and the team wasn't sharp against the Panthers a few weeks later.

We're also told starting RB Thomas Jones (ribs-questionable) will start but of all the starters, he's likely to play the least (our guess is about a half). The team plans to get a good look at backup RB Cedric Benson in the game and he's expected to handle the majority of the carries once Jones is done playing.

Friday Update: The Bears have several prominent players are listed for Sunday's game in Detroit, but with home-field advantage throughout the NFC playoffs already in hand, the team has the luxury of not having to rush players back into the lineup.

Of the starters who have recently missed time CB Nathan Vasher (right hamstring-probable) and SS Todd Johnson (right ankle-questionable) are the only players who practiced each day this week and both are slated to return.

Vasher has missed the last three games but was upgraded Thursday from questionable. Johnson has missed the last two outings. Former starting S Chris Harris has filled in for Johnson, while Ricky Manning Jr., has started for Vasher.

Besides Johnson, the four other starters listed as questionable are RB Thomas Jones (ribs), OLT John Tait (left ankle), LG Ruben Brown (shoulder), and CB Charles Tillman (back).

None of the four practiced Wednesday but Jones returned to practice on Thursday and Friday. He has been slowed by ankle and hamstring problems the past few weeks and it's likely he'll be spelled prominently in the game, if he plays at all, by backup RB Cedric Benson, who is averaging 12 carries for 55 yards over his last five games with three touchdowns.

Tait and Tillman didn't practice at all this week.

Tait was replaced by backup OT John St. Clair in Sunday's win and that is likely to be the case again this week. If Tillman is held out and Vasher plays, Manning Jr. would remain in the starting lineup.

Brown, who practiced Friday after sitting out Wednesday and Thursday, was downgraded Thursday from probable. If he's unable to play Sunday, backup OL Terrence Metcalf would step in.

Special teams LB Leon Joe (left hamstring) is also listed as questionable. He injured the hamstring on the game's opening kickoff in New England Nov. 26 and practiced for the first time since then on Thursday. He sat out Friday, however, and appears to be at least another week away from returning He also missed two games earlier in the season with a strain in his right hamstring.

Starting C Olin Kreutz (knee-probable) was added to the injury report Thursday when he was given a veteran's day of rest. The Pro Bowl starter returned to practice on Friday and will start Sunday.

Starting SLB Hunter Hillenmeyer (thigh-probable) was removed from the injury report on Thursday. He had been listed as probable Wednesday when he sat out practice.

Personnel-wise, there's a chance that rookie KR/PR/CB Devin Hester could get a look at receiver before the regular season ends. He has taken reps there despite team assertions that he is solely a cornerback for now. His potential insertion on offense could be nothing more than a way to force prospective playoff opponents to account for an additional personnel package, although the breakaway speed he's brandished this year makes him dangerous anytime he touches the ball.

LIONS

Saturday Update: Despite having only two wins and nothing to play for, the decision has been made for starting QB Jon Kitna to handle that role for the final two games.

Friday Update: The team's IR list stable grew to 14 players this week when the team added starting DT Marcus Bell (hand) and starting ORT Barry Stokes (ankle) to the list. Bell broke his hand vs. the Vikings and underwent surgery last Friday.

Backup DT Anthony Bryant, who was signed off Tampa's practice squad two weeks ago, will get his second straight start on the interior for Bell alongside DE Cory Redding and backup DT Cleveland Pinckney will rotate in off the bench. On the offensive line, rookie OL Jonathan Scott will start in Stokes' place the last two games, further adding to that unit's weekly change in personnel.

Starting LG Ross Verba (groin-out) likely won't play in the season finale, either. Backup OL Stephen Peterman, who was promoted from the practice squad last week, and rookie Frank Davis will start at guard Sunday, leaving veteran OL Rick DeMulling to come in off the bench if needed.

Also listed on the injury report are backup LB Teddy Lehman (hamstring-doubtful) and veteran TE Marcus Pollard (hamstring-questionable), although Pollard, who was inactive last week, practiced each day this week. Lehman has missed the last three games and didn't practice this week.

KR/PR/WR Eddie Drummond (hip-questionable) was downgraded Thursday from probable. He practiced Wednesday but was unable to on Thursday and Friday. If he can't play, backup RB Aveion Cason would likely assume his return duties.

Starting CB Fernando Bryant (concussion-probable) returned to practice fully this week for the first time since being injured Dec. 3. He's on track to start Sunday. Backup CB Stanley Wilson has started for Bryant the last two weeks.

Starting OLT Jeff Backus (foot) was removed from the list on Thursday after being listed as probable on Wednesday when he rested his sore foot. He has gone through the same regimen for several weeks but hasn't missed any game-time.

To replace Stokes and Bell on the roster, the Lions signed free agents DT Langston Moore and RB Lamar Gordon.

With so many players out, head coach Rod Marinelli is getting a chance to see plenty of players receive action. One of those players is Gordon, who may be active Sunday.

"He's a big presence, especially in pass blocking," said Marinelli. "He's got size enough to pick up their backers."

Backup WR Corey Bradford (elbow) was one of the players Marinelli identified as being injured in last Sunday's loss, but after an MRI earlier in the week, he's been cleared to play.


NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS (10-4) AT JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS (8-6) 1:00 PM EST

Saturday Update: Backup RB Laurence Maroney (back-questionable) and starting SS Rodney Harrison (shoulder) both traveled with the team to Jacksonville, which is a good sign that they will be active tomorrow. We'll confirm their status at least an hour before tomorrow's game.

The team signed WR Byron "Bam" Childress off of the practice squad Saturday to the active roster.

Friday Update: Starting QB Tom Brady (right shoulder), nickel CB Ellis Hobbs (wrist), and starting DE Richard Seymour (elbow) practiced again Friday and will play in their normal role.

The team signed veteran P Todd Sauerbrun on Friday to handle that job.

Backup RB Laurence Maroney (back-questionable) practiced again Friday but while the club is optimistic, he's certainly not a lock to play. His status remains a game day decision and he's doing better this week than he was at this time last week. They're being careful with him so that this injury doesn't linger. Backup RB Kevin Faulk (knee-questionable) practiced Friday and should play although he's not 100 percent.

Starting ORT Ryan O'Callaghan (neck) practiced again Friday but remains questionable to play. Backup OT Nick Kaczur is working in his place.

Backup TE Ben Watson (knee) and starting DT Vince Wilfork (ankle) missed practice again Friday and despite being listed as questionable, likely won't play. Backup DLMike Wright (questionable-shoulder) practiced again Friday and is expected to start for Wilford while rookie TE Dave Thomas sees extra time for Watson.

Starting SS Rodney Harrison (shoulder) practiced again Friday but remains questionable to play. Backup S James Sanders will likely start again for him. He’s missed six weeks but has a chance to be active.

JAGUARS

Saturday Update: RB Maurice Jones-Drew (knee-probable) is in contention for this year's rookie of the year award and we expect him to have a good game tomorrow against a defense that will be missing its best player versus the run, NT Vince Wilfork (ankle-questionable).

Friday Update: Starting RB Fred Taylor (right hamstring) was downgraded to out from questionable on Friday after being unable to practice for the third straight day.

"He's just not ready to go," head coach Jack Del Rio said. "We'll give him the weekend to rest it, and hopefully we'll have him back at practice next week."

Taylor, who has rushed for 1,120 yards this year, will be replaced by rookie backup RB Maurice Jones-Drew (knee-probable) Sunday vs. New England. Jones-Drew, who has 764 yards rushing and 10 TDs, has been hobbled of late also by a sore calf but got three full days of practice in this week and should be ready for full-time action.

"I think that it's the smart thing to do at this point," Taylor said of sitting out vs. the Patriots. "For my future, my well being ... I don't want to rip it. I don't want to tear it. I have all the faith and confidence in my team to get this win on Sunday."

#3 RB LaBrandon Toefield also figures to back up Jones-Drew. He had six carries for 25 yards after Taylor had left the loss to the Titans.

The only two other players to miss any practice this week are starting DT Marcus Stroud (right ankle-probable), and backup DT Tony McDaniel (hip-questionable) - have missed any practice time this week.

Stroud, who still isn't 100 percent recovered from a severe ankle injury suffered in the season opener, and McDaniel, both worked fully Thursday and Friday after sitting out Wednesday's session.

The other six players listed are probable and all practiced each day this week and are expected to play in their usual roles. They are P Chris Hanson (left hamstring), backup LB Jorge Cordova (hamstring), starting RG Vince Manuwai (wrist), backup CB Ahmad Carroll (groin), backup RB Montell Owens (head), and starting FB Derrick Wimbush (ankle).

Saturday Update: The 49ers have given up 23 touchdown passes this year and starting QB Matt Leinart should be able to find his receivers against the 49er secondary. San Francisco also struggles to apply pressure (29 sacks) so Leinart will have time to get the ball down the field more often.

Friday Update: Backup RB Marcel Shipp (ribs-probable) practiced again Friday and should be able to play. He was inactive last week.

Starting OLT Leonard Davis returned to practice Friday and is expected to start unless he needs to be with his seriously ill father who 83 years old. Backup OT Oliver Ross would start for him if needed

Starting MLB Gerald Hayes (ribs-questionable) missed practice again Friday and likely won't play. Backup MLB Monty Beisel will likely start for him.

Backup OLB/DE Calvin Pace (illness-probable) returned to practice Friday and is expected to play.

49ERS

Saturday Update: With #1 WR Antonio Bryant (four-game suspension) out, look for starting WR Arnaz Battle to be the main target of starting QB Alex Smith in the game.

Backup WR Bryan Gilmore, who starts for Bryant, was coached by legendary 49er receiver coach Jerry Sullivan when the two were with the Cardinals and Dolphins.

Friday Update: Starting WR Antonio Bryant has been suspended without pay for the team's next four games (regular season or playoffs) for violating the NFL Substance Abuse Policy.

Bryant will miss the final two games of this season and the first two games of next year. If the team make the playoffs those games will count against the suspension as well. He can still participate in training camp, preseason, and with the team in the off-season.

Bryant was arrested last month on charges of reckless driving, driving under the influence and resisting arrest after being pulled over in his Lamborghini doing in excess of 100 m.p.h.

In his first year in San Francisco, Bryant has been starting QB Alex Smith's primary target. He has 40 catches for 733 yards and three scores this year.

Backup WR Bryan Gilmore will start in place of Bryant. He has caught seven passes for 136 yards on the year. Seldom used backup WR Taylor Jacobs will also see some snaps in back of Gilmore.

Backup TE Eric Johnson (knee) practiced again Friday but remains questionable to play. He has missed three games with an MCL sprain but is likely to return to limited action Sunday as starting TE Vernon Davis' backup.

Meanwhile, backup OT Adam Snyder (ankle/knee) practiced again Friday but remains listed as questionable. He could be available this weekend against Arizona after missing the last two games. If he can play, Snyder would likely split duty at right tackle with starting ORT Kwame Harris.

On defense, starting MLB Derek Smith (hamstring-questionable) practiced again Friday and is expected to play. Smith has missed two games with a hamstring strain. Backup ILB Jeff Ulbrich has been starting for him. They'll see how Smith does in pre-game warm-ups Sunday before making a decision on who will start.

Starting DT Ron Fields suffered a broken arm in Wednesday's practice and was placed on IR. Backup DT Ike Sopoaga is expected to start for him.

Saturday Update: Starting OLT Levi Jones (questionable-knee) will play but whether or not he starts is still undecided. The Broncos have done a good job of using rookie DE/OLB Elvis Dumervil (7 sacks) off the edge and Jones might not be ready for his quickness in this his first game action since injuring himself on October 15.

Friday Update: Starting QB Carson Palmer (probable-right shoulder) practiced again Friday and is expected to start.

Starting WR Chad Johnson (probable-ankle) practiced again Friday and is expected to start.

Starting TE Reggie Kelly (shoulder-probable) practiced again Friday and is expected to start.

Starting C Rich Braham (knee) was downgraded to out on Friday after not practicing again. Backup C Eric Ghiaciuc starts again for him.

Starting OLT Levi Jones (questionable-knee) practiced on Friday and head coach Marvin Lewis said after practice that he expects Jones to play, although Lewis did not say whether Jones would start or not. Rookie OT Andrew Whitworth struggled against Colt DE Dwight Freeney on Monday and this could be the perfect time to put Jones back into the lineup against a speedy Denver defense.

Starting ORT Willie Anderson (foot-probable) was rested all week but is still expected to start. Backup OL Stacey Andrews would start for him if needed.

Starting DE Bryan Robinson (toe-probable) missed practice again Friday but is still expected to start. Backup DT Domata Peko would start if needed.

Backup LB Andre Frazier (groin-questionable) missed practice again Friday and likely won't play. He plays mostly on special teams.

BRONCOS

Saturday Update: Rookie TE Tony Scheffler has become one of starting QB Jay Cutler's favorite receivers since taking over the offense three games ago. Scheffler has 7 catches for 139 yards with 2 TDs in his last three games and we feel he'll do well again tomorrow. Scheffler is a very good dynasty league prospect so now is the time to get him. Denver took a chance on the little known tight end before the draft for two big reasons. He's very athletic and he ran under 4.4 in private workouts.

Friday Update: Starting WR Javon Walker (shoulder-probable) practiced again Friday and is expected to start. He has a grade-1 shoulder separation which is the lowest grade. It's considered a minor injury.

Starting TE Stephen Alexander (ribs-probable) practiced again Friday and is expected to start.

Backup ILB Stephen Cooper, who is slated to start for Godfrey, is seen as his long-term replacement and has good dynasty league value for the future. The team already signed him to a long-term extension earlier this season.

Saturday Update: Starting RB Shaun Alexander is clearly the biggest fantasy disappointment of the season. We understand that he missed six games due to injury but he's only has four rushing touchdowns in eight starts a year after setting an NFL record with 27 rushing TDs. Keep in mind he turns 30 in August and his offensive line clearly isn't as good as it once was so now is the time to move him if you're in a keeper/dynasty league if you can get equal value.

Backup WR Bobby Engram, who saw limited snaps in last week's game, is expected to see more against the Chargers.

“He’s feeling good. In fact, it’s my understanding that they were able to do a little bit with his medication, and back off just a little bit that way. But he’s feeling strong. He’s feeling good. Now he’s a little rusty out there today. I never have to correct him on anything, and I had to do it a couple times today. It’s nice to have him back. He’s one of the key guys, I think, that helps us go and it’s good to have him back," head coach Mike Holmgren said.

Former starting SS Michael Boulware is expected to start over current starting SS Jordan Babineaux on Sunday. The team is looking for more size to help their sagging run defense and Boulware, a former collegiate linebacker, has better size than Babineaux.

Friday Update: Starting WR Darrell Jackson (toe-doubtful) missed practice again Friday and isn't expected to play with backup WR Nate Burleson starting for him again. Backup WR D.J. Hackett will split playing time again with Burleson. Backup WR Bobby Engram is also expected to see more playing time this week.

The college football bowl schedule features a triple-header of games later today with South Florida taking on East Carolina in the PapaJohns.com Bowl, New Mexico hosting San Jose State in the New Mexico Bowl and Tulsa battling Utah in the Armed Forces Bowl. If there is a position of choice in today’s games it will be in the secondary where there are a number of decent prospects for the 2007 draft as well as some intriguing good young players.

South Florida (8-4) vs East Carolina (7-5)
Saturday’s first game between South Florida and East Carolina won’t quite go down as must-see TV for college football fans, but pro scouts will be watching a number of decent prospects for the 2007 draft. USF LB Stephen Nicholas (#51, 6-2, 225) is one of the more underrated backers in the country, while ECU features speedy WR Aundrae (#2, 6-0, 185) is a rising star in the upcoming draft class. Allison, for example, had 142 receptions the past couple of years, while Nicholas had 96 tackles this fall including 12 for loss and 2 picks. ECU also has something of a sleeper at OT in Eric Graham (#78, 6-6, 320) who has prototype RT size, but missed some time late in the season with a strained knee. Meanwhile, other ECU players to watch in this game include QB James Pinkney (#7, 6-3, 210), one of those good athletes playing QB, along with DBs James Flourney (6-0, 205) and Pierre Parker (#1, 6-0, 2150, while USF players to watch include LB Pat St. Louis (#54, 6-1, 230), along with athletic OT Thed Watson (#55, 6-5, 295). The Bulls also have some intriguing young players including junior CB Trae Williams (#21, 5-9, 185) who picked off 7 passes this fall, as well as freshman QB Matt Grothe who passed for 2,500 yards and ran for another 600 in an exciting rookie campaign.

New Mexico Bowl, Albuquerque; 4:30 PM ET; ESPN

New Mexico (6-6) vs San Jose State (8-4)
It is probably no surprise that hometown New Mexico will be playing in this year’s New Mexico Bowl after the Lobos were passed over by other bowls the previous couple of years; plus, it should keep the Lobos travel expenses to a minimum. It is probably something of a surprise that San Jose State is in this bowl. In fact, it’s probably a surprise that the long-downtrodden Spartans, who last made a bowl appearance in 1990 are in any bowl at all, but after going 8-4 this fall are one of college football’s most improved teams. The Spartans may not be rewarded on draft this coming April but do have an emerging star in junior CB Dwight Lowery (#25, 6-0, 185) who intercepted a remarkable 9 passes this past season; that after he picked off 13 in a 15-game JC career. And while NFL scouts check out Lowery for future reference, they will also look in on several San Jose State seniors including LT Matt Cantu (#76. 6-3, 290), OG Marcel Burrough (#62, 6-5, 325), WR James Jones (#3, 6-0, 195), SS Chris Vedder (#8, 6-0, 205) and DT Freddy McCutcheon (#92, 6-2, 295), although none probably rates more than a free agent prospect for the upcoming draft. Meanwhile, New Mexico isn’t likely going to have a huge impact at the 2007 draft either but does have a couple of decent late round prospects in underrated OLB Quincy Black (#11, 6-2, 235), who had 113 tackles and 3 picks this fall, and OG Robert Turner (#59, 6-3, 325), while PK Kenny Byrd (#80, 6-0, 166) who hit on 31 of 37 FG attempts over the course of the past two seasons.

Armed Forces Bowl, Fort Worth; 8 PM ET; ESPN

Utah (7-5) vs Tulsa (8-4)

style="margin-left: 40px;" class="MsoNormal">The 2006 campaign was something of a disappointment for 7-5 Utah but don’t blame DB Eric Weddle (#32, 6-0, 200), who was named Mountain West Defensive Player of the Year for the second consecutive season. Weddle, who played corner this fall, but probably projects to FS at the next level which he has also played, had 6 interceptions this fall, two of which he returned for TDs; for good measure, Weddle also returned a fumble for a score. The Utes’ defense also features a pair of massive interior DTs in Kelly Talavou (#98, 6-2, 310) and Paul Soliai (#90, 6-3, 320), while SS Casey Evans (#31, 6-0, 205) does a nice job helping out Weddle in the secondary. Meanwhile, QB Brett Ratliff (#15, 6-4, 225) is something of a sleeper at QB while OT Tavo Tupola (#78, 6-3, 300) is an experienced, strong LT who projects to OG at the pro level.

Tulsa has quietly put together a very solid program in the shadow of the Sooner; indeed, the Hurricanes won 17 games over the course of the past couple of seasons including 8 this fall. That success likely won’t translate into any first-day picks at the 2007 draft, however, Tulsa has a number of seniors who will get some late round consideration including Canadian RT Jeff Perrett (#78, 6-6, 330) who anchors a huge offensive line which also includes OG John Hameister-Reis (#67, 6-5, 310), yet another Canadian, and C Aaron Danenhauer (#56, 6-2, 305). The star of the Tulsa offense, though, is junior QB Paul Smith (#12, 6-2, 195) who could be a factor at the 2008 draft. Smith, who completed over 65% of his pass attempts this season, has a couple of decent targets in WRs Idris Moss (#80, 5-9, 180), a former Syracuse speedster, and Ryan Bugg (#83, 6-0, 195). The Hurricanes’ defense is led by Conference USA Defensive Player of the Year Nick Bunting (#41, 6-1, 230), a disruptive strongside LB. Tulsa also features a deep secondary including CB Nick Graham (#22, 5-10, 190) and safeties Kedrick Alexander (#2, 6-1, 210) and Bobby Blackshire (#4, 6-2, 205)......

Add UCLA junior OG Shannon Tevaga to the list of underclassmen seriously considering entering the 2007 draft. Tevaga has said he won’t make a decision about his future after the Bruins play Florida State in the Emerald Bowl on December 27th. Tevaga also has reportedly not yet filed paperwork with the NFL advisory committee to look at his draft stock, but the athletic 6-2, 313-pounder’s stock is reportedly moving up draft charts across the NFL.

The first big – or at least not small – post-season all-star game goes later today with the Magnolia Gridiron Classic in Jackson, Mississippi. The Magnolia game will feature a matchup between a team made up largely of D1A players whose teams are not in the regular bowls versus a team of players from lower levels. The game kicks off at 11 AM ET. Players that pro scouts will be keeping a close eye on in this game include Coastal Carolina QB Tyler Thigpen, UConn RB Terry Caulley, Eastern Michigan WR Eric Deslauriers and DE Kevin Howe, OTs Jason Capizzi of Indiana (Pa) and Brent Pousson of McNeese State, and DEs Marques Murrell of Appalachian State and Alton Pettway of Grambling. While the colleges have the numbers, the NFL will also get in on the action later tonight when Oakland hosts Kansas City. While the Chiefs still have some longshot hopes of squeaking into the playoffs, the big story could be the Raiders who in the running to have the #1 pick at the 2007 draft. Indeed, the Raiders, who would have the second pick overall if the draft were held today, will clinch at least one of the top two picks this year with a loss tonight.....

There is a better than even chance that no one from this game will be selected at this year’s draft, however, pro scouts likely will still be keeping an eye on the Troy-Rice matchup in the New Orleans for future reference. In particular, they will be watching Rice’s super sophomore WR Jared Dilliard (#81, 5-11, 170) who exploded on the national scene this fall setting school single-season marks for receptions (82), yards (1,176), and TD catches (20); Dilliard also tied an NCAA record by catching a scoring pass in 12 consecutive games this season, while his overall streak of 14 consecutive games with a TD pass is the second longest in NCAA history.

In fact, they maybe should rename this one the ‘future bowl’ as virtually all the best players on both teams are underclassmen. In addition to Dilliard, for example, Rice will be led by a fellow sophomores QB Chase Clement (#16, 6-1, 185) and undersized OLB Brian Raines (#31, 5-11, 195). Meanwhile, junior QB Omar Haugabook (#16, 220), the Sun Belt offensive player of the year, leads the ‘other’ Trojans. Haugabook also has a good young target in junior WR Gary Banks (#17, 6-0, 195). Seniors to watch in this one include Rice DE Courtney Gordon (#98, 6-3, 250) and OT Rolf Krueger....

Clemson CB Duane Coleman has been charged with simple possession of marijuana following a traffic stop.....

Georgia Tech senior Reggie Ball is one of two YellowJackets veterans to have been academically ineligible for the school’s Gator Bowl game.....

Southern California RT Kyle Williams missed practice earlier this week because of "personal issues." Williams, a 6-foot-6, 300-pound fifth-year senior, started every game this season, but was called for three false starts in the Trojans' 13-9 loss to UCLA which knocked them out of BCS title contention. Williams is expected to return to practice today.....

Texas CB Aaron Ross, a top prospect for the 2007 draft, was taken to an Austin hospital Thursday morning after he apparently was involved in a wreck on his way to football practice. Ross had been found disoriented after he reportedly fell asleep at the wheel while driving to practice. Ross has since been released.....

Penn State DT Ed Johnson has been suspended for violating a team rule and will miss the Outback Bowl. The 6-1,290-pound Johnson, a free agent prospect for the 2007 draft, started all 12 regular-season games this year and tied for third on the squad with five sacks....


Notre Dame junior safety Tom Zbikowski says he is still trying to decide whether to return to Notre Dame for his final season of eligibility next fall or enter the 2007 NFL draft. That may be a bit of change as it had been reported earlier this year that Zbikowski had already decided to turn pro this winter. Like other underclassmen around the country, Zbitkowski will make a final decision after Notre Dame’s Sugar Bowl match up with LSU. Zbikowski did make his professional boxing debut as a heavyweight with a first-round knockout at Madison Square Garden in June after winning 75 of 90 amateur bouts. Unlike most schools where players automatically get a redshirt year if they don't play a season, players at Notre Dame must apply to the faculty board for a fifth season. To be eligible, players must receive their bachelor's degree. Other Irish players who could return for another season include TE John Carlson and C John Sullivan. Notre Dame head coach Charlie Weis says he has talked with all the Irish players eligible to come back for fifth seasons and while he would not comment on specific players, did say that Notre Dame fans will be very happy when the results are in suggesting at least some of these players will be returning next fall.....

BYU (10-2) vs Oregon (7-5)

Every bowl season has a couple of gems on the early schedule and this may be one of this year’s most intriguing matchups outside the BCS games. In particular, this game features one of the best QBs in the 2007 draft class no one has seen in BYU pivot John Beck (#12, 6-2, 212). Beck is a little short at barely 6-2, plus he’s a little older (at age 25) than the average draft prospect, however, Beck is a big-time gunslinger who if he played at a major program like Ohio State or Southern Califoinia would be a legit Heisman type candidate. This year, for example, Beck threw for almost 320 yards per game as he completed 70% of his pass attempts, 30 of which went for scores versus only 6 picks. And Beck leads a talented offense which also includes All-America TE Jonny Harline (#13, 6-4, 230) and versatile RB Curtis Brown (#6,5-11, 205) who ran for 890 yards this fall and caught 55 passes. They all work behind a big offensive line anchored by massive RT Jake Kuresa (#73, 6-4, 340) who has also played some OG andC this fall. Meanwhile, MLB Cameron Jensen (#35, 6-1, 240) is one of the more productive mike backers in the country, although, he probably lacks the overall athleticism to rate a first-day grade this year.

The future is the word at Oregon where the Ducks best pro prospects are underclassmen like sophomores RB Jonathan Stewart (#28, 5-10, 235), WR Jaison Williams (#4, 6-5, 245), OT Max Unger (#60, 6-5, 300), and DB Patrick Chung (#15, 5-11, 205) and redshirt freshman safety Jairus Byrd (#32, 5-11, 210). The Ducks’ 2007 draft class, though, has some depth including FB/TE Dante Rosario (#44, 6-4, 250), C Enoka Lucas (#55, 6-3, 300) and OG Palauni Ma Sun (#77, 6-5,335), WR James Finley (#18, 6-1, 205), DE Matt Toeaina (#45, 6-3, 300), FS J.D. Nelson (#28, 5-11, 220) and PK Paul Martinez (#36, 6-2, 210).

NO CHANGES

With both Detroit and Oakland losing their 12th game of the season on Sunday, there were no changes at the very top of the 2007 draft selection order. Detroit lost 16-9 to Green Bay while the Raiders were shutout 20-0 at home by St. Louis. As a result, if the draft were held today, the Lions would have the 1st pick overall, while Oakland would pick second. Meanwhile, Tampa Bay gave it a great shot but ultimately lost in overtime to Chicago; that dropped the Buccaneers to 3-11 and leaves them with the 3rd pick overall, followed by Arizona at #4 and Houston at #5. The Texans moved up to the latter spot after losing at New England while Washington, which had been tied with Houston for that spot, posted an upset win in New Orleans. As usual, we’ll have the full, updated first round selection order for the upcoming draft, as well as this week’s rookie of the week winner and the updated rookie stats.....



Tennessee junior WR Robert Meacham, who is thinking seriously about entering the 2007 draft, says he will wait until after the Volunteers’ bowl game before he makes his decision. Meachem, who set the Vols' single-season record with 1,265 receiving yards this season, has applied to the NFL draft advisory board to see where he projects and has said that he would like some indication that he’s going to be a first-round pick before deciding to give up his remaining year of eligibility and turning pro. And right now Meacham would appear to be close to being a late first round prospect; at 6-2, 210, Meacham has prototype speed along with sprinter speed and should make some waves at the scouting combine in February. Meacham, though, had never done much prior to this season, so consistency will be an issue that pro scouts will have to address if Meacham does declare for this year’s draft. Underclassmen have until January 15th to file paperwork with the NFL in order to be included in the upcoming draft field.....

Portis likely will remain the No. 1 back if the Redskins don't trade him, and a deal remains a possibility. Still, Betts has been terrific the past four weeks. He certainly has earned a greater share of the workload next season.....


Before the Bears' 34-31 overtime victory Sunday over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Tank Johnson called a Bears executive at the game. Johnson had interpreted a television report about an upcoming meeting between coach Lovie Smith and GM Jerry Angelo to decide Johnson's future as a signal that the Bears had already decided to cut him.....

Texans offensive coordinator Troy Calhoun is emerging as a leading candidate to replace Fisher DeBerry as head coach at Air Force.

WEEK 16

New Hampshire junior QB Ricky Santos won the Walter Payton Award, given annually to the best player in Division I-AA football. Santos passed for 2,681 yards and 23 touchdowns this season.....

Underclassmen thinking about entering an upcoming draft are usually the preserve of college football’s major schools and conferences. Every once in a while though a top prospect emerges out of lower level divisions. This year’s top candidate is Newberry OT Heath Benedict, a 6-6, 320-pound Division II All-American. Benedict, who originally signed with Tennessee, is reportedly waiting on the NFL’s College Advisory Committee to evaluate his draft status. Benedict reportedly has said if he is projected as a third round pick or higher, he will enter the draft.....

A quartet of Ohio State juniors including WRs Ted Ginn and Anthony Gonzalez, RB Antonio Pittman and RT Kirk Barton filed paperwork with the NFL on Friday to evaluate their prospects for the 2007 draft. Underclassmen have until January 15th to apply to the NFL for early entry to this year’s draft.....


Cleveland has placed rookie inside linebacker D'Qwell Jackson on injured reserve after the 2006 second round pick from Maryland underwent surgery on his toe. Jackson is suffering from "turf toe," an injury he suffered in last week’s loss against Pittsburgh. Jackson started all 13 games for the Browns and has 93 tackles, fourth among all rookies in the NFL this fall. Meanwhile, the Browns, which would have the 7th pick overall were the 2007 draft held today, has named Derek Anderson as the starting quarterback for Sunday's game in Baltimore. Anderson replaces Charlie Frye who is out with an injury.....

If there is ever going to be a change at the very top of the 2007 draft selection order it may have to be later today as Detroit and Oakland, which would have the first and second picks overall if the draft were today respectively, play the final games on the schedules which could legitimately be described as ‘winnable’. Detroit, for example, will be in Green Bay to take on the 5-8 Packers, while Oakland will be at home to struggling St. Louis which is also 5-8. Detroit will then wrap up its schedule with games against Chicago and Dallas, while the Raiders will finish their season with dates with Kansas City and the Jets, both of which are 7-6 and fighting for a playoff berth. Meanwhile, most of the other teams with high picks this year are in tough today. Tampa Bay, which would pick third if the draft were held today, is at Chicago, Arizona at #4 hosts Denver, Houston at #5 is at New England, #6 Washington is at New Orleans, and #7 Cleveland is at Baltimore. And there will be some extra attention paid to the Arizona-Denver matchup where both teams will be starting rookie QBs. Indeed, the Cardinals’ Matt Leinart and Broncos’ Jay Cutler were selected on successive picks at the 2006 draft.....

League sources tell us that if Parcells does come back, it would happen only if Owens is gone. Could happen. Some executives around the league believe Owens' play has shown signs of slippage - look at all those dropped passes, and look at how he no longer gets great separation from defensive backs - so if it does come down to that, they wouldn't be surprised if Owens is the odd man out.....


Across the league it is well known that Smith and Schottenheimer can’t stand each other. If the Chargers get bounced in the first round of the playoffs, it’s likely that Smith will bounce Marty to the unemployment line.....

Here's an interesting name that could be available in the offseason: Bears running back Cedric Benson. With Thomas Jones playing well, the Bears could be open to trading Benson. Denver wants a big, strong back. Benson fits that mold.

SENIOR YEAR

Tennessee junior QB Erik Ainge has made it pretty clear that he will not be entering the 2007 draft but rather will be back at UT for his senior season. Like the rest of us though Ainge is being quoted as saying he has no idea whether junior WR Robert Meacham will be back with the Vols next fall or whether he’ll be entering the upcoming draft......

Michigan junior OT Jake Long announced Thursday that he will return to Michigan for his senior season. Long had been considered a potential top 15 prospect for the 2007 draft.....

Saturday

DALLAS COWBOYS (8-5) AT ATLANTA FALCONS (7-6) 8:05 PM EST

COWBOYS

FB Oliver Hoyte (knee) has been limited in practice this week and probably won't play. Backup FB Lousaka Polite will fill in.

Backup FS Tony Parrish could be active for this week's game and could see some playing time in back of starting FS Keith Davis who didn't play well last week.

FALCONS

Thursday was the last normal practice for the week since the game will be played one day less than normal.

Their league-leading rushing attack could be at less than full strength Saturday night, as both starting RB Warrick Dunn (left calf) and rookie backup RBJerious Norwood (right knee) were nicked up in the win over Tampa Sunday and are listed as questionable. Neither practiced Wednesday but Norwood (550 yards rushing) got in a full practice Thursday while Dunn again rested. Both backs remain as game day decisions on their status.

If one or both back is out, starting FB Justin Griffith figures to play a more pronounced role carrying the ball and there have even been whispers out of Atlanta that starting QB Michael Vick, who has rushed for 934 yards thus far this year, could line up in the backfield with backup Matt Schaub playing at QB. Vick needs only 35 yards to surpass Bobby Douglas' NFL record for most rushing yards in a season for a quarterback.

The Falcons, who will only have a walk-through Friday before flying to Dallas, signed free agent RB Jamal Robertson Tuesday as insurance against the possible absence Saturday of Norwood and Dunn, whose 997 yards rushing ranks fifth in the NFC. Robertson was in San Francisco when offensive coordinator Greg Knapp was with the 49ers.

Former starting CB Jason Webster (torn groin muscle) has been upgraded this week to questionable from doubtful. He re-joined practice for the first time in over a month Wednesday and Thursday after only doing side-field work last week.

Seven starters were listed as probable when they rested Wednesday but only DT Grady Jackson (knee) and CB DeAngelo Hall (knee) sat out Thursday's workout as well. Despite missing both days of practice, both are still expected to start.

The five who sat out Wednesday and returned to practice Thursday are MLB Ed Hartwell (knee), WLB Keith Brooking (knee), WR Ashley Lelie (thigh), ORT Todd Weiner (knee), and C Todd McClure (back).

Jackson has rested on Wednesday the last four weeks but this is the first week he's missed more than one practice. Weiner has also missed parts of practice the last two weeks. Hartwell missed most of the first two months of the season but has played well the last month.

Rookie CB Jimmy Williams (high left ankle sprain) isn't listed on the injury report. He started last week in his first appearance in a month and will likely be in the lineup again Saturday night. CB/KR/PR Allen Rossum played well in the starting lineup after Webster went down and is now back at his usual nickel position.

To make room for Robertson, the Falcons waived rookie S Nick Turnbull, who was claimed by the Bears.


NEW YORK JETS (7-6) AT MINNESOTA VIKINGS (6-7) 1:00 PM EST

Starting QB Chad Pennington (calf-probable) practiced again Thursday and is expected to start.

Backup RB Kevan Barlow (calf-probable) practiced again Thursday and is expected to be available for Sunday's game. But he has been inactive the last two games, and admitted this week he's played most of this year "on one leg" due to off-season knee surgery.

Starting FB B.J. Askew (foot-questionable) was limited again Thursday but should be able to play. He was inactive last week backup FB James Hodgins blocked well.

Backup WR Justin McCareins (foot-probable) practiced again Thursday and is expected to play.

Starting NT Dewayne Robertson (shoulder-probable) practiced again Thursday and is expected to start.

Starting DE Kimo von Oelhoffen (shoulder-probable) practiced again Thursday and is expected to start.

Starting OLB Bryan Thomas (shoulder-questionable) was limited again Thursday but should be able to start.

Veteran CB David Barrett (hip-questionable) was limited again Thursday but should be able to play. Journeyman CB Hank Poteat has been starting of late.

Starting RB Chester Taylor (bruised ribs-questionable) participated in part of Thursday's practice and should be able to start. Given his sore ribs, he may not get his usual amount of carries especially since backup RB Artose Pinner topped 100 yards in Detroit last Sunday.

Starting WR Marcus Robinson (ankle-probable) participated in part of Thursday's practice and is expected to start.

Starting DT Pat Williams (knee-probable) is having his practice time limited but he's expected to start.

CLEVELAND BROWNS (4-9) AT BALTIMORE RAVENS (10-3) 1:00 PM EST

Starting QB Charlie Frye (sprained right wrist-questionable) didn't practice again Thursday and likely won't play with backup QB Derek Anderson starting for him again. Frye tried some limited throwing Thursday but that's it.

Backup WR Dennis Northcutt (shoulder-questionable) returned to practice Thursday and should be able to play. However, his role could be reduced as third-round pick WR Travis Wilson could see some playing time. Northcutt had three bad drops in the Pittsburgh game, which would seem to make this a perfect time for Wilson to get some work. The Browns are wary about deactivating Northcutt because they don’t trust anyone else to catch punts.

Starting TE Kellen Winslow (knee-questionable) hasn't missed any practice time this week and is expected to start. He's knee has limited his effectiveness of late but he had arguably his best game against the Ravens, seven catches for 92 yards earlier this season.

Starting G Joe Andruzzi (knee-doubtful) isn't practicing and isn't expected to play. Backup OL Lennie Friedman is expected to start for him.

Starting DT Ted Washington (knee-questionable) has been limited this week in practice but is still expected to start.

Starting ILB D'Qwell Jackson (turf toe-doubtful) will have season-ending surgery and will be replaced by fellow rookie ILB Leon Williams. He's big and fast but dropped in the draft because his hips are a bit stiff, and because he inexplicably spent part of his senior season as a backup. He views himself as a first-round talent and will get a chance to start backing up that bold statement.

Starting OLB Willie McGinest (pectoral-questionable) has been able to practice this week and is expected to start.

Starting CB Leigh Bodden (knee-questionable) has been able to practice this week and is expected to start.

RAVENS

#2 RBMusa Smith (neck stinger) is out again.

"They just want to be careful with it. I should be fine," he said.

Veteran RB Mike Anderson will handle his third down role again.

Smith expects to play next week.

"The doctors will tell us when they are comfortable and will make that final decision probably next week," head coach Brian Billick said.

Starting RB Jamal Lewis (illness) was added to the injury report as probable after not practicing but is expected to start.

Starting WR Derrick Mason (thigh-questionable) didn't practice Wednesday but did some practicing Thursday and expected to start.

"Derrick’s good," Billick said Thursday. "He’s a little stiff. He was limited, but I’m confident he’ll get through the week."

Starting TE Dan Graham (ankle-questionable) practiced Thursday and is expected to start. #2 TE Ben Watson (knee-questionable) didn't practice Thursday and likely won't play. Newly signed TE O.J Santiago (foot) is already questionable to play. Rookie TE David Thomas will see extra snaps this week.

Starting ORT Ryan O'Callaghan (neck) practiced Thursday but remains questionable to play. Backup OT Nick Kaczur has started the last two games in his place.

Starting DT Vince Wilfork (ankle-questionable) didn't practice again Thursday and is more to the doubtful side. Starting DE Ty Warren could slide over to fill in or they could use backup DL Mike Wright (shoulder-questionable), who did practice Thursday.

Veteran CB Ellis Hobbs (wrist-questionable) practiced Thursday and is expected to handle the nickel role with veteran CB Chad Scott starting for him again.

Starting SS Rodney Harrison (shoulder-doubtful) isn’t practicing this week but he’s getting better and could play as early as next week. Backup S James Sanders has been starting for him.


MIAMI DOLPHINS (6-7) AT BUFFALO BILLS (6-7) 1:00 PM EST

QB Daunte Culpepper (knee) was placed on IR this week. Free agent QB Shane Matthews was signed to replace him on the active roster.

Starting QB Joey Harrington (ankle-probable) practiced again Thursday and is expected to start.

Starting RB Ronnie Brown (broken left hand) remains out. Backup RB Sammy Morris will start again for him. Brown's injured hand still hasn't healed enough for him to practice. The team is hoping he'll be able to practice next week.

Starting WR Chris Chambers (knee/ankle) returned to practice Thursday and is expected to start and was upgraded to probable.

Starting G Jeno James (knee-questionable) practiced again Thursday. If he can practice Friday, he should be able to start. Backup OL Kendyl Jacox has been starting for him.

Starting C Rex Hadnot (shoulder-probable) practiced again Thursday and is expected to start.

Backup DT Dan Wilkinson (knee) missed practice Thursday and is questionable to play.

BILLS

Starting RB Willis McGahee is not on the injury report and has practiced all week, but is still not 100 percent. He's still hobbled a little by his ankle injury and his ribs are still not fully healed. Still, he'll start.

Starting OLT Jason Peters (questionable-knee) missed practice again Thursday.

"Our medical staff is calling it a bone bruise and it was pretty sore," said head coach Dick Jauron. "It just showed up. Surprisingly, it didn’t bother him after the game and it didn’t bother him the next two days. He came in Wednesday and said he got up and it was sore. We’ll see where that one goes.

Peters still believes he'll be ready to play.

"I'll be alright," he said after Thursday's practice. "I'll be out there on Sunday."

If he can't play, the coaches may have to move starting LG Mike Gandy back out to left tackle where he started the season and put backup G Tutan Reyes in at guard or rookie OL Aaron Merz. The only other alternative would be put rookie OT Brad Butler in for Gandy.

"(Putting Gandy at left tackle) is a consideration," said Jauron. "You know who we have on the active roster. We’re limited by that group, but we can configure it a number of different ways. Hopefully we won’t have to, but we’ll wait and see."

Starting SLB Takeo Spikes (questionable-knee/ankle) did limited work on Thursday but has yet to practice.

"It was an ankle and a knee," said Jauron. "He got rolled up in the pile, but as you saw on Sunday, he came back and played and finished the game. We’ll wait and see, but he did not work (with the team in practice)."

Starting CB Terrence McGee (questionable-ankle) practiced again Thursday and is expected to start. Backup CB Kiwaukee Thomas would start if needed.

Starting SS Donte Whitner (questionable-hamstring) practiced again Thursday and is expected to start. Backup S Jim Leonhard would start if needed.

Starting CB Chris Gamble (hamstring) missed practice again Thursday and remains questionable to play. Former starting CB Ken Lucas (hamstring) returned to practice Thursday but remains questionable to play. Backup CB Christian Morton (hamstring), who started for Gamble last week, was placed on IR. The team claimed DB Derrick Strait off of waivers from the Bears this week. If Gamble and Lucas can't play, rookie CB Dion Byrum, who was claimed off of waivers recently, could start.


WASHINGTON REDSKINS (4-9) AT NEW ORLEANS SAINTS (9-4) 1:00 PM EST

Washington has some concerns along the offensive line heading into Sunday's game with the Saints.

Starting RT Jon Jansen (calf-questionable) sat out practice again on Thursday. The injury has bothered Jansen the last few weeks, but it has not forced him to miss any games.

If Jansen is able to practice Friday, he should be able to start.

If Jansen can't play, backup OL Todd Wade would likely start. Backup OL Jim Molinaro, the team's sixth-round pick in 2004, could also factor into the mix.

Starting C Casey Rabach (hand-questionable) sat out practice again on Thursday, however head coach Joe Gibbs said earlier this week that Rabach could be back on the field Friday.

"He told me 'I think I'll be able to practice on Friday,' so we'll see," Gibbs said. "Basically what you do is protect it so it can't get hit and then he can snap with the other hand."

Earlier this week, he underwent minor surgery to have three pins placed in his broken left hand. He has since had his hand placed in a cast. He snaps the ball to starting QB Jason Campbell with his right hand.

If Rabach can't play, backup OL Mike Pucillo would likely start.

Starting WR Santana Moss was added to the injury report Thursday as probable after missing practice due to an illness. He's expected to start.

SAINTS

Starting WR Joe Horn (groin-questionable) didn't practice Wednesday or Thursday and isn't expected to play.

Horn, who tried playing Dec. 3 but came out early in the game, was inactive Sunday night in Dallas. He also missed the first two games of November with a strained groin but started in the next three contests after that span. Horn denied rumors Wednesday that he would be sidelined for the rest of the season and that he would "absolutely" be back for the playoffs.

The team opened up last week's game with a three-receiver set but #4 WR Terrance Copper is listed as his backup but look for #3 WR Devery Henderson to split playing time with him.

Starting WR Marques Colston (ankle) isn't listed on the injury report this week. He missed two games prior to last week's win in Dallas, when he returned to action and caught five passes for 48 yards. He left last week's game with cramps but hasn't been limited this week.

Starting SS Omar Stoutmire (knee-questionable), starting TE Mark Campbell (knee-questionable) and backup RB Aaron Stecker (hamstring-questionable) are the remaining players listed on the injury report.

Stecker, who practiced Wednesday and Thursday, missed the game three weeks ago with a sprained ankle but returned to action Dec. 3 when he pulled his hamstring, which forced him inactive last week.

Stoutmire and Campbell both sat out practice Wednesday and Thursday. Backup TEs Billy Miller and John Owens back up Campbell and the team also signed veteran TE Marcellus Rivers for depth. They released backup DE Trevor Johnson, who was added last week, to make room for Rivers.

Veteran S Steve Gleason would start for Stoutmire if needed.


JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS (8-5) AT TENNESSEE TITANS (6-7) 1:00 PM EST

JAGUARS

The Jaguars list 17 players on their injury report after placing backup S Nick Sorensen (hamstring) on IR Thursday afternoon. He had been bothered by a sore hamstring for weeks and re-injured it last Sunday.

All but two of the other 15 players are listed as probable and should be in their usual spots Sunday in Tennessee.

The only two players not listed as probable are backup P Chris Hanson (left hamstring-questionable) and backup DT Tony McDaniel (questionable-hip). Hanson missed practice Wednesday and Thursday and McDaniel only missed Thursday's workout when he was added to the injury report.

The only three of the 15 players listed as probable who have missed any practice time this week are starting DT Marcus Stroud (right ankle), who rested for parts of Thursday's workout, starting RB Fred Taylor (right hamstring) and his backup, rookie Maurice Jones-Drew (calf). Taylor rested Wednesday but returned for a full workout Thursday and Jones-Drew didn't practice either day, although he's expected to play Sunday.

Jones-Drew has been listed as probable with a hamstring ailment in recent weeks but hasn't missed any playing time and had a prolific game Sunday with 303 all-purpose yards and two rushing touchdowns. Taylor tweaked his hamstring late in the second quarter Sunday and didn't play in the second half, due as much to the sizable lead the Jaguars had built up as his hamstring. He had nine carries for 131 yards in the first half, including a 76-yard run. He's expected to start.

Among the other 12 players listed as probable are six starters - RG Vince Manuwai (wrist), CB Brian Williams (hamstring), WLB Clint Ingram (shoulder), MLB Daryl Smith (shoulder), TE George Wrighster (shoulder) and FB Derrick Wimbush (ankle).

Williams returned to the starting lineup two weeks ago in Miami after sitting out the previous week and Manuwai rested one day last week but started. The other five were also listed last week but all started.

Backups listed as probable include CB Ahmad Carroll (groin), #4 WR Cortez Hankton (hamstring), LB Jorge Cordova (hamstring), LB Kenneth Pettway (groin), dime back Terry Cousin (groin), and RB Montell Owens (shoulder).

Cousin has played the last two weeks for the first time since early-October.

To replace Sorensen on the roster, the Jaguars signed rookie DE Jeremy Mincey, who spent parts of this season with both New England and San Francisco.

TITANS

DE Antwan Odom (right knee) was placed on IR Wednesday and the Titans promoted TE Cooper Wallace from the practice squad to replace him on the roster. Odom had his knee scoped Nov. 9 and finishes the season having played in four games. This injury, which occurred Oct. 29, isn't related to the one on the same knee that forced him to miss the first three games of the campaign.

Wallace may be needed Sunday vs. Jacksonville since starting TE Bo Scaife (ankle-questionable) has been nursing a sore ankle for the past few weeks and didn't practice Wednesday or Thursday.

Among the other seven players listed as questionable are starting TB Travis Henry (ankle), his backup, rookie RB LenDale White (hip), starting RGBenji Olson (back spasms), starting DT Albert Haynesworth (back), and starting WR Drew Bennett (knee).

White was the only of the five to practice both Wednesday and Thursday with Henry, Olson and Bennett sitting out both days, although Olson did participate in individual drills Thursday.

Head coach Jeff Fisher has not addressed who would start at RB - White or former starter Chris Brown - if Henry, whose 937 rushing yards ranks sixth in the AFC, is inactive. With White inactive last week, Brown saw his first action in more than a month and rushed four times for 44 yards.

Olson was inactive last week and was replaced by backup OL Eugene Amano.

Haynesworth was added to the injury report Thursday when he was held out of practice, but he's expected to be at full-strength Sunday and likely will practice Friday.

"(He has) low back soreness, so we just held him out of practice," said Fisher of Haynesworth.

Bennett is also expected to start.

Also listed as questionable are starting WR Brandon Jones (chest) and backup DE Josh Savage (hamstring) but both practiced Wednesday and Thursday. Savage has been inactive the last three games. Jones is expected to start.

Starting DE Kyle Vanden Bosch (illness) was removed from the injury report on Thursday when he practiced fully. He was listed as questionable on Wednesday when he rested.

Starting DE Travis LaBoy, who missed two games recently with a concussion, left practice early Wednesday with a hand injury but he returned Thursday to work fully.


TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS (3-10) AT CHICAGO BEARS (10-3) 1:00 PM EST

Every player on their active roster practiced Thursday as the team continued preparations for Sunday's game with the Bears.

The team's injury concerns are all on the defense.

Starting LCB Phillip Buchanon (groin-probable) was back on the field Thursday after sitting out Wednesday. He is expected to start Sunday.

Nickel CB Juran Bolden (quadriceps) practiced again Thursday but remains questionable to play.

Starting DT Ellis Wyms (ankle-questionable) and starting MLB Shelton Quarles (knee/ankle-questionable) both practiced for a second straight day and are expected to start.

"I don't have any changes on the injuries. Everybody did practice so we're encouraged by that," head coach Jon Gruden said.

BEARS

Starting DT Tommie Harris (ruptured left hamstring) was placed on IR Tuesday, a day after undergoing surgery that will sideline him for several months. Veteran DT Alfonso Boone and former starter Ian Scott will take over most of the snaps Harris would have seen the remainder of the season and DT Antonio Garay will now be active.

The Bears had their first practice of the week on Thursday, as head coach Lovie Smith elected to stay with his usual regimen of giving the team two days of physical rest after a win.

Two other defenders - CB Nathan Vasher (right hamstring) and SS Todd Johnson (right ankle) - are among four starters listed as questionable.

Vasher, who sat out practice Thursday, was inactive Monday night while Johnson, who returned for a full practice on Thursday, has missed the last two games. Nickel back Ricky Manning Jr. started for Vasher vs. the Rams, with Dante Wesley and rookie CB/KR/PR Devin Hester seeing snaps at the nickel and dime, and former starting S Chris Harris has filled in for Johnson.

Speaking of Hester, he was named NFC Special Teams Player of the Week Wednesday for the second consecutive week and third time of his rookie campaign. Hester now has six returns for touchdown this year, which has already set the NFL single-season mark. Smith squelched the notion Wednesday of possibly playing Hester on offense in certain packages, saying that the rookie is devoted to playing on defense and returning kicks.

Also listed as questionable are starting RB Thomas Jones (left ankle) and starting OLT John Tait (left ankle). Both sat out practice Thursday and have had lingering injuries for the past couple of weeks.

Backup RB Cedric Benson (35 carries for 170 yards and two touchdowns in the last three games) has begun to assert himself in a rotation with Jones (1,053 yards rushing) of late. If Jones can't practice Friday, the chances of him playing would lessen a bit. #3 RB Adrian Peterson would back up Benson and also see time on third downs if Jones can't play.

Tait has had to be re-taped the last two games but hasn't missed any snaps. Jones tweaked his ankle late in the win Monday night and didn't return after his 30-yard touchdown capped the team's first possession of the second half.

Special teams LB Leon Joe (left hamstring-questionable) is the fifth player listed as questionable. He injured the hamstring on the game's opening kickoff in New England Nov. 26 and hasn't practiced since. He also missed two games earlier in the season with a strain in his right hamstring.

Starting C Olin Kruetz (knee), starting LG Ruben Brown (shoulder) and #3 QB Kyle Orton (illness) were all added to the injury report as probable Thursday when they didn't practice. Kruetz and Brown are expected back on the field Friday and will start Sunday. With the team having already clinched the NFC North and a home playoff game, Smith will probably give some veterans a day or two to rest during the final three weeks of the season to preserve them for January.

Off the field, the home of starting DT Tank Johnson was searched by police Thursday morning. Johnson attended morning meetings before leaving Halas Hall prior to practice beginning. He later was charged with not having a gun owner identification card after six firearms were found and taken from the scene. Two adults and two children were present at the home when the search was conducted.

Smith said after practice that Johnson is scheduled to go through the rest of the week as usual.

"Tank's status right now is just like it was before," said Smith, adding that the incident is a distraction. "All I know right now is that there was a search warrant to check his home. It definitely is a concern because Tank has had to deal with some things like this in the past. Yes, it definitely is a concern."


DETROIT LIONS (2-11) AT GREEN BAY PACKERS (5-8) 1:00 PM EST

LIONS

The rushing attack is now a long-term question mark with the news this week that starting RB Kevin Jones will miss the rest of this year and possibly large chunks of 2007 as well, due to a Lisfranc injury to his left foot. Jones was placed on IR Tuesday and underwent surgery Wednesday. It's believed that the fracture he suffered was a grade-three which is the worst of the three grades. This is similar to what former Eagle RB Duce Staley suffered earlier in his career.

Backup RB Arlen Harris will likely get the bulk of the carries in the season's final three outings but the team will need to address Jones' absence in either the draft or free agent market this off-season.

On Wednesday, starting RG Blaine Saipaia (chest) was also placed on IR. He started four games since the middle of the year and re-aggravated a previous injury last Sunday to the extent that surgery will be needed. The other starting guard, Ross Verba (groin-out) was downgraded from doubtful on Thursday and may end up on IR as well.

With Saipaia and Verba both out, rookie Frank Davis and veteran OL Rick DeMulling, who started several games at guard earlier in the season, will step into the starting lineup Sunday, and hopefully the final two games as well.

Starting CB Fernando Bryant (concussion-out) and starting DT Marcus Bell (hand-out) were also both downgraded Thursday from doubtful. Bryant was injured in the first quarter Dec. 3 on a helmet-to-helmet hit with teammate WLBErnie Sims and was inactive Sunday. Backup CB Stanley Wilson started for Bryant last week.

"He's been doing some stuff; he just didn't put the helmet on," said head coachRod Marinelli of Bryant, who he hopes can return next week. "We'll see next week where it's at but they're pretty cautious usually on those heads."

Bell was injured vs. the Vikings and backup DTs Anthony Bryant and Cleveland Pinckney will take the majority of his snaps. Bryant was signed off Tampa's practice squad last week. With starting DT Shaun Rogersalready on IR, DE Cory Redding is the other interior starter.

Backup LB Teddy Lehman (hamstring) and backup TE Marcus Pollard (hamstring) are questionable. Lehman was inactive last week and didn't practice Wednesday or Thursday, while Pollard was added to the report Thursday when he didn't practice.

Starting OLT Jeff Backus (foot) was removed from the list Thursday after being listed as probable on Wednesday when he rested. As he has been the last two weeks, Backus has sat out a day of practice and started each Sunday, which he has done in every game of his pro career.

Backus is still working on his streak of starting every game as a pro and won't let this ailment keep him from playing Sunday. The lone Lion listed as probable is now WR/KR/PR Eddie Drummond (toe), who rested Wednesday, but returned for a full workout on Thursday.

Backup WR DeVale Ellis (shoulder) isn't listed for the first time in three weeks. He was injured Nov. 19 and missed the subsequent three games.

To replace Jones and Saipaia on the roster, the Lions promoted G Stephen Peterman and rookie RB Anthony Sherrell from their practice squad. The Lions also promoted C Dave Pearson from the practice squad on Thursday. Pearson's promotion was possible since the team didn't replace Rogers on the roster last week, making three roster spots available this week after Jones and Saipaia went on IR.

PACKERS

Starting RB Ahman Green (knee-probable) returned to practice Thursday and is expected to start.

Starting WR Donald Driver (shoulder-questionable) returned to practice Thursday and is expected to start. #3 WR Ruvell Martin (bruised chest-questionable) missed practice again Thursday. If he can't play, backup WRCarlyle Holiday would fill in for him.

Starting ORT Mark Tauscher (groin) returned to practice Thursday and was upgraded to questionable but isn't expected to play with backup OL Tony Mollstarting for him again.

#2 TE David Martin (ribs-questionable) practiced again Thursday. If he can practice Friday, he'll likely play. If not, #3 TE Donald Lee would fill in again.

Starting C Scott Wells (illness-probable) returned to practice Thursday and is expected to start.

Starting CB Charles Woodson (shoulder-probable) rested again Thursday but is still expected to start.

DENVER BRONCOS (7-6) AT ARIZONA CARDINALS (4-9) 4:05 PM EST

K Jason Elam (left hamstring-probable) practiced Thursday and is expected to start. It was the first practice day that Elam kicked since being injured against Seattle on a fake field goal. Elam kicked Sunday at San Diego. He said Thursday he felt much better when he woke up than on any previous day since being injured.

Starting WR Rod Smith (hip-probable) practiced again Thursday and is expected to start. Rookie WR Brandon Marshall (ankle-probable) practiced again Thursday and is expected to play.

Starting TE Stephen Alexander (ribs) missed practice again Thursday and remains questionable to play. The team still believes he'll be able to play but look for rookie TE Tony Scheffler to see more playing time as he has done recently.

Starting ORT Adam Meadows (hamstring) has seen limited practice time this week and remains questionable to play. Backup OT George Foster would start again if needed.

Starting OLT Erik Pears (ankle-probable) practiced again Thursday and is expected to start.

Starting MLB Al Wilson (thumb-probable) is recovered form the strained neck he suffered Dec. 3 against Seattle. He was taken off the field on a stretcher. But Wilson started last week at San Diego. Head coach Mike Shanahan said this week Wilson looks much better in practice.

Starting CB Darrent Williams (toe/shoulder) was downgraded form probable to questionable on Thursday. However, Williams did practice more Thursday than he did Wednesday. He has a toe issue that developed this week and his shoulder continues to hamper him. It is a separation that he has been playing with for weeks. Williams is expected to start but backup S Curome Cox and backup CB Karl Paymah would play in his place if his toe worsens.

CARDINALS

Arizona is going for their third win a row this weekend when they play the fading Broncos for their final home game of the season. It been three years since any Cardinal running back has rushed over 100 yards in consecutive weeks. Starter Edgerrin James has posted identical numbers in the last two weeks rushing for 115 yards on 26 carries.

#2 RB Marcel Shipp (rib) returned to practice Thursday and was upgraded to questionable. They'll see how he does Friday in order to determine his status.

Starting ORT Reggie Wells (illness- probable) missed practice again Thursday. He had a temperature of 102 last week but was able to play against the Seahawks. Former starting ORT Oliver Ross would start if needed.

Starting DE Chike Okeafor (calf- probable) missed practice again Thursday and could be downgraded.


PHILADELPHIA EAGLES (7-6) AT NEW YORK GIANTS (7-6) 4:15 PM EST

EAGLES

Starting RB Brian Westbrook is just five yards shy of his first 1,000-yard rushing season. Westbrook, bothered by knee swelling earlier in the year, has practiced and played without incident of late and is not listed on the injury report.

In the past six meetings against the Giants, Westbrook has 721 scrimmage yards (120.2 per game) & eight touchdowns (4 rush, 3 rec., 1 PR). He leads all NFL running backs with a 6.2-yard average per touch and four receiving touchdowns. He ranks second in yards per carry (5.1), and third in receiving yardage (624)and receptions (69).

Starting QB Jeff Garcia has thrown for seven touchdowns and no interceptions in his three starts since replacing injured QB Donovan McNabb.

Starting C Jamaal Jackson (ankle-probable) practiced Thursday and will start Sunday.

On defense, nickel LB Shawn Barber (neck-questionable) has yet to practice this week. However, head coach Andy Reid indicated earlier this week that Barber should be able to play Sunday. Barber missed two games because of a knee sprain but returned last week against the Redskins

"We expect him to be back. We're just letting that thing calm down a little bit," Reid said.

If Barber practices Friday, he should play.

Nickel CB Rod Hood (hamstring-questionable) practiced again Thursday but remains listed as questionable. Hood was inactive for last Sunday's game against the Redskins.

Backup CB William James worked as the nickel corner last week and figures to see significant action against the Giants' taller receivers. The former Giant signed with the Eagles earlier this season.

Former starting WLB Matt McCoy (shoulder-probable) practiced Thursday and was upgraded from questionable. McCoy, who was inactive last week against Washington, lost the starting job to rookie LB Omar Gaither. Gaither, who had an interception last week, will make his third career start.

On special teams, the team released backup LB/special teamer Jason Short earlier this week and promoted backup RB/CB Bruce Perry from the practice squad.

Perry will likely serve as the primary kick returner this weekend although special teams coordinator John Harbaugh was not revealing anything on Thursday.

"It has not been decided (who will be our returners) and if it had we probably wouldn't have announced it yet anyways," Harbaugh said.

As for Perry, Harbaugh said: "If he is active he'd be on all the cover teams. He'd be on kickoff, punt - he'd be on all four phases. He's done a good job. He's been practicing all year. He's been with us a couple of years now so he knows what we do on special teams."

Backup RB/KR/PR Reno Mahe has handled the return duties much of the year. He may still return punts, but we don't rule out the possibility that the Eagles use either Westbrook or starting CB Lito Sheppard.

"Those guys have been in the mix all year. Some games it wasn't part of the plan. Other games it has been part of the plan. It has been more part of the plan recently and I am sure it will continue to be part of the plan," Harbaugh said.

As for the chance that Westbrook be back on punts, Harbaugh said: "I think we would be inclined to use him whenever, strategically, it made the most sense for us to try and help us get a big return and make a play and win the game somewhere along the way."

GIANTS

Starting C Shaun O'Hara (ankle) missed practice again Thursday and remains questionable to play. Backup OL Rich Seubert is working in his place.

Starting OLT Luke Petitgout (fibula-out) is expected to miss their final three games so backup OT Bob Whitfield starts again.

Starting ORT Kareem McKenzie (neck-probable) practiced again Thursday and is expected to start.

Starting DE Michael Strahan (foot-doubtful) hasn’t practiced during team drills but he did go through individual drills for the second straight day on Thursday.

“I would say the word is ‘encouraged,’” head coach Tom Coughlin said when discussing Strahan. “We are encouraged. He did some work yesterday and did a little more today. It’s always a question of what it’s going to be like the next day. We’re very conservative and reserved in what we say because of that, but it is encouraging that he has had an opportunity to work a couple of days in a row.”

Strahan is not expected to play and rookie DE Mathias Kiwanuka will fill in once again.

Starting CB Corey Webster (toe-questionable) practiced for the second straight day on Thursday and should be active after missing three games. However, it's uncertain whether or not he’ll reclaim his starting spot from veteran CB R.W. McQuarters.

K Jay Feely (right foot) was taken off the injury report.He was listed as probable.

Moss missed practice again Thursday and if he can't practice Friday, look for backup WR Ronald Curry to start for him.

Starting OLT Robert Gallery (elbow) practiced again Thursday but remains questionable to play. Backup OT Chad Slaughter would start again if needed.

WEEK 15

Louisville sophomore WR Mario Urrutia has said he is leaning toward returning to school next year rather than entering the NFL draft. Urrutia is eligible for the draft as a redshirt sophomore. He has caught 53 passes this season for 929 yards and six touchdowns. Urrutia reportedly has not contacted the NFL special draft advisory committee regarding his potentail status as a 2007 prospect. Urritia also reportedly has not ruled out rethinking his status after the Cardinals' Bowl game in early January. The bigger question in Louisville, of course, is whether junior QB Brian Brohm decides top enter the 2007 draft where he would likely be at least a top 5-10 player......


Just one day after his release in New England, where he had fallen out of the Patriots' regular wide receiver rotation in the past month, WR Doug Gabriel has been claimed by Oakland, the team that traded him to the Patriots last summer. Oakland, which would have the second pick if the 2007 draft was held today, has sent Gabriel to the Patriots for a fifth-round draft pick.....

Jerry Jones said he's seen enough to know that Tony Romo is going to be a good quarterback, despite his recent hiccup against the New Orleans Saints. But Jones does not see the need to rework Romo's contract just yet.....

Quarterback Aaron Brooks is 0-6 as a starter for the Raiders in his first season in Oakland. He is running out of time to get his first victory... A strong finish by Brooks also would go a long way toward deciding whether he returns for a second season with the Raiders or walks away with the distinction of being a failed one-year experiment.....


The Packers have eight players scheduled to become unrestricted free agents and one a restricted free agent, and the only ones who might command a contract of any significance are running back Ahman Green and tight end David Martin. As a result, the Packers head into 2007 armed with bundles of money and the salary cap room to spend it.....

He hopes his next game, whenever that might be, is with the Colts. Stokley is under contract through 2009, but there is no guarantee the team will bring him back in '07.....

Jones Out

Can things get much worse for the Detroit Lions. The Lions are mired at the very bottom of the NFL standings and are on the verge of ending up with the first pick at the 2007 draft. Now comes word that emerging RB Kevin Jones faces a long rehabilitation after he undergoes surgery for a serious foot injury. Not only is Jones out for the rest of the year after being placed on IR, but Detroit fears that he could also miss all or part of the 2007 season. Jones was diagnosed with a Lisfranc-fracture dislocation, although he is going to get a second opinion from a foot specialist before taking any action. The loss of Jones likely won’t affect what the Lions do with their first pick at the upcoming draft, but it could them in the market for another body at RB with a later first-day pick this spring.....


With just three weeks to go in the 2006 regular schedule, Detroit hangs on to the #1 pick in the hypothetical 'if the draft were held today' selection order for the 1st round of the 2007 draft. However, because the Lions combined opponents had a pretty good week this past week, the gap those combined opponents W-L percentages of the Lions and Oakland, the other team with just two wins to date, closed significantly. Indeed, the Raiders combined opponents have now won just two more games than those of the Lions, down from a gap of 6 last week. Meanwhile, Tampa Bay has moved up to the 3rd overall pick, while Arizona slips a spot to 4th after upsetting Seattle on Sunday. And Houston and Washington are currently tied for the 5-6 spots.....


If Southern California head coach Pete Carroll ever needed a reason to spurn any offers to return to the NFL coaching wars he may have gotten in the past few days when all but one Trojan juniors thinking about entering the 2007 draft indicated that they would be back at school next fall. All-American OT Sam Baker, for example, reportedly told the LA Times on Saturday that he would be returning to school for his senior year next fall, while DE Lawrence Jackson reportedly told Trojans’ head coach Pete Carroll of his decision to stay late last week. Both were considered to be potential mid-to-late first round prospects for the upcoming draft if they did opt to turn pro this winter. Fellow juniors OLB Keith Rivers, DT Sedrick Ellis and RB Chauncey Washington had earlier all also indicated they would be returning for their respective senior campaigns. That leaves only star WR Dwayne Jarrett as the Trojans' only draft-eligible junior who might turn pro. Jarrett, who could go as high as a top 10 pick this coming April, has said he won’t make his decision until after the Rose Bowl game. Underclassmen have until January 15th to file paperwork with the NFL in order to become eligible for the upcoming draft. Meanwhile, Michigan, the Trojans’ Rose Bowl opponents also got some good news with top juniors QB Chad Henne and RB Mike Hart indicating that they would be back in maize next fall. The Wolverines, though, are waiting for official word from juniors OT Jake Long and DT Alan Branch on their immediate plans. Branch, who could very well be the first defensive player off the board were he to leave school, while Long is a top 10-15 candidate.....

Jon Gruden said Monday he is confident he will be the Bucs coach 'for the long haul.' To prove his point, Gruden will start rookie quarterback Bruce Gradkowski on Sunday at Chicago, though he acknowledged veteran Tim Rattay might give the Bucs a better chance to beat the Bears.....

Only three games remain this season, and Shell didn't sound too optimistic about Moss making a swift comeback. Therefore, this brings about the possibility that Moss has played his final game as a Raider... Moss still has two years left on a contract that calls for him to earn $9.75 million in base salary next season and $11.25 million in '08. The Raiders' options are to get Moss in the proper frame of mind, trade him or release him without any compensation.....

Troy Vincent is 35, and hamstring injuries have limited him to just four games this season. However, Washington's strong safety plans to return to the Redskins next season.....

The Falcons have rookie tailback Taurean Henderson on the practice squad, but they also could sign a veteran free agent as insurance in case Dunn, Atlanta's leading rusher, or Norwood (550 yards) can't play. Some of the available running backs include Lee Suggs, Duce Staley, Jonathan Wells and Quentin Griffin.....

With Clemens jumping him in the hierarchy and Pennington playing healthy and due a $2-million roster bonus, it's unlikely Ramsey will be with the Jets beyond this season.....

HOME SWEET HOME

Houston-native Vince Young made a dramatic return home yesterday afternoon when the Tennessee QB, taken 3rd overall at the 2006 draft, raced 39 yards for a game-winning TD in overtime to give the Titans a 26-20 win over the Texans. Prior to the draft, Young had lobbied hard for the Texans to take him with the #1 pick, however, with David Carr already entrenched as the Texans’ starting QB, Houston opted for DE Mario Williams instead. For the most part, though, there wasn’t much to choose in the head-to-head match-up between Young and Carr on the day. Young completed 19 of 29 passes for 218 yards, but did throw an interception, while Carr, the first player taken at the 2002 draft, hit on 17 of 23 passes, but for only 140 yards. If there was a difference between the two it was Young’s 86 rushing yards including that final run.....

Detroit took another step toward clinching the first pick at the 2006 draft when the Lions lost 30-20 to Minnesota Sunday afternoon to drop to 2-11. Oakland also lost again – this time 27-10 in Cincinnati – to also drop to 2-11, but the Lions have played a somewhat weaker schedule than the Raiders and as such would still have the #1 pick this coming April if the draft were held today, while Oakland stays at #2. Meanwhile Tampa Bay, which lost to Atlanta, moves up to the 3rd pick, while Arizona, which upset Seattle, moves down a spot to #4 and Houston rounds out the top 5. Clemson TE Thomas Hunter broke his foot in practice Sunday and will not play in the Music City Bowl against Kentucky. Hunter, a marginal prospect for the 2007 draft, had 16 catches for 305 yard this season for a team-best 19.1 yards per reception this past fall.....
